welcome aboard. nice froggies.
the way i understand it is its what they eat in nature that makes them poisonous. and in captivity..they are not. Am i right? our vancouver aquarium has them . their pretty neat.

Awesome frogs Phillip! Welcome aboard, you'll like it here for sure. Just remember not to let the frogs swim with the Discus, and don't feed the fish from your fingers after you've touched a frog, and you'll be fine ;)

I'm pretty sure it's the skin secretions of these frogs that are poisonous, am I right? But how about the tadpoles? Are they just as poisonous? When a bunch of us visited Oliver at Below Water a while back, I was fascinated with the colours on those frogs! Almost convinced myself to buy some, but figured I've got my hands full with the fish as it is!

Anyways, welcome Phillip.

Just love the little blue one! very pretty. So, you don't touch them at all, just look at them....and they secrete the poison out of their skin??

BTW, nice photos too. :D Jen K.

I'm interested in the poison aspects also, my daughter would love to have a blue frog in her terrarium.

Any tips on keeping them if they are not horrifyingly drop dead toxic?

i won't worry about the toxin in the frogs.most the poison frogs in the market are captive bred, and they are not toxin because we can't supply the same food that they are eat in the wild.just ask the seller are they wild caught or captive bred before buy it.and they are fairy easy to keep if you keep fellow two main guideline.1- keep the terrarium in high humidity 80-90 %.2- always have alot supply of small insect to feed your frog, insect like fruitfly, pinhead crickets,or termite if you could find some outside.i bred my own fruitfly.you will be surprise to see how many jars of these culture i have in the house. hope these could help little bit.

also i would like to point out that ,the poison frogs are a display kind of frogs.they don't do well if you take them out and play around with it.they will get stress and die if you doing that.just set up a nice terrarium with alot live plants with few additional of these frogs of your choice.you will having a awesome miniature of rainforest display in your living room.

Do different species get along with one another? Jen K. ???

bigblue13
04-23-2003, 04:21 PM
yes,but i perfer only one species in their own tank to avoid mix breeding.

Breeding....Great! How often do most breed? Do they show parental care? I know nothing about these little beauties.

BTW--I keep fruit flies too for my Epiplatys (killifish). But they are kind of a hassle. Sometimes, I just let them die out entirely. Do you use plastic pop bottles to house the flies with foam "cork" on top?

poison dart frogs will bred all year long if condition is right.but i only bred my only few months of the year.because i want all my female frogs could get some rest .my frogs lay eggs every other week in the breeding season.they lay around 5-7 eggs depend on the species.
for the fruitfly.i use 32oz. mason jar to culture my fruitfly.bigger bottle give the fly more surface area.so you end up with more fly from your culture.

Wow,

i really like the display tank.

Could you please explain a bit about the setup and the plants?

thanks

i use most of the plants that are suitable in warm and humid condition. go to a plant nursery store, and they have plenty to chose for.just ask some of the workers over their, they should able to help you to pick the right plants.and the plants on the driftwood are the airplants.these you may have to order them from a special store.just search in your internet, you should able to find some sites that will selling these kind of the airplants in a reasonable price.also,on the bottom area i place some live moss to make it more natural.their is no one way street about the set up of the terrarium.it's just depend on your imagination.

Breathtakeingly beautiful bigblue!

So do the frogs lay their eggs in the water? Are the males hard on the females when spawning...breeding?

The yellow and black one you posted looks like it has a tail?? Is that a juvie?

I have such a story about poison dart frogs. A few years ago I was at the National AKA (killifish) convention. They had a raffle for two poison dart frogs. Many entries were placed in a large container. I was asked to draw the winning tickets. I drew the first lucky person. Much hoopla and cheers. (there was a big crowd) Winner picked up his frog happily. I think it was red and black.

They asked me to draw for the second winner. Out of hundreds(!!!) of tickets, I drew the same guys name!!! Everybody thought it was rigged. Boo-s rang out. They accused me of having entries up my sleeve (which was NOT the case!!)

What are the odds of that happening....300 to one??!!! True story!!! There's certain things in my life I'll never live down..that's one of them. Jen K. :-[

Phillip,

thanks for explaining.

To be honest with you just having this kind of display even without the frogs is fine to me. :)

the frogs only laid their eggs on the leaves.and the male are not aggressive toward female. i just want give all the females frogs have sometime to recover from laid eggs.yes, the yellow and black frog are still in their tapole stage.it take another week for the tapole to turn to a frog.
