Hi everyone!
Anyone else out there crossing domestics with wilds? I snapped a few pics of one of my wild greens X with a blue snake skin. The f1's of this cross are very variable in pattern. This one is showing some really nice blue markings, has nice red eyes, and maintained alot of the dads copper colored siding> sadly its the only one in the spawn to look like this. heres a few pics...

Hi,
Any body out there want to guess the size and age of this fish? I'm amazed at how fast it has grown compared to some of its siblings. I can't wait until its mature and can be paired up. I've got some really high hopes for it.

sly, those are beauties....did you breed the cross?

no Al..was from a reputable breeder. These are his fishes not mine.

Those are some gorgeous fish Al and Sly. I love crosses perhaps as much as wilds.
Al, as to guessing size and age, here is my shot at size : If the Vallisneria is part of what came from my house, it is Vallisneria gigantea. A mature leave in the second picture measures about 8 mm width. Using that, I arrive at an estimate of just under 6 inches for the fish, nose to end of tail.
How bad is this estimate ??? Age, how could I know ?, but the fish looks young and obviously you told us it is.
Thanks for sharing. Cheers, Francisco.

Okay,
I can see this isn't quite working like I Thought it might. Francisco you were brave my friend! Unfortunately I wish you were correct with your guestamation.
The fish in the pic is over a year old.!!!
Its a runt. Its just shy over 2 inches.!!!
I was hoping there would have been some discussion about its shape, eyesize, coloration.

I have kept it because it does have unique markings for that cross as compared to its siblings , and to see if it would grow. he's my token cull now... and I have become rather fond of it in weird demented way. Its not for breeding stock obviously, but I was curious if it would pair up.
It was raised in a bare glass tank, and just placed in that gravel tank.
Fish like this are the reason I feel we need to really focus on quality. To the unwary... it might have looked normal. i Have seen a lot of fish like this sold.
okay... now you can all comment.

Very nice Paul, I'm surprised at how clean the pigeon is. It looks like quite a variety, you'll have fun watching the color fill in as they grow out.

A good sport and a fool. That Vallisneria leave is too narrow !! First you runt the fish, and then you runt a perfectly nice plant....what are you doing over there.
I don't mind being taken and admit defeat. Did I understant correctly and the fish is over 6 inches ??
Cheers, Francisco.

can you make me more of those Rod? is that where my rt x brown came from?
ok one in the back is a female...and the front blue one is a male. the other one...hmm..
i had marlboro x alencer. the male being the marlboro. and they were peppered. and even the alencer type ones had kinda a pepper look to them sometimes. didnt work well at all. maybe the opposite way is better?
which is your male brew?
Hi April,
Yeah thats where your fishies came from :), well i can try to get more of them as i still have both parents...poppa rt is getting kinda old and enjoying life in his retirement, but i'm sure he's still got something left....lol.
Well i think your right about the front one being a male, he's starting to do the dance of luv with another fish in the tank, one at the back i agree is prob a female, but she's just eating and ignoring everyone at the moment ::) the middle one is most likely a female by the way she's been behaving, flirting and carrying on etc....lol. No breeding yet, but i think its close :)

Its okay Rod, I thought that might happen, and I suspect it happened with alot of people.
I was going to come up with an alias so no one would have been worried about posting to it, then I was going to point out the "flaws" myself. But That wouldn't have accomplished what i was hoping for. If we are to make this thing work, it can't matter who posts the pic, their reputation, and friendships.. we have to all be able to take and give the honest criticisms.
If i ever post a junk fish.. please let me know me everyone. I'll defend it I think it deserves it, but odds are we all learn from it. From now on when I post a pic I am going to try to point out where I think the fish is lacking as well.
take care,
al
