View Full Version : first pool death

Hi Everyone....

just a short pool update.....

Well you can see in the picture the death of an angelfish :( I'm not sure of the cause. I've asked Cary what are his thoughts and he seems to think it could be some type of predator.... like a dragon fly larvae... maybe.... anyway this angelfish looks as if something was chewing on it....

any other ideas of the cause ???

Beth

btw.... I thought I'd throw the nickle in so you all could see how much they're growing ;)

No losses in the Discus yet! (not that I'm anticipating any ;) )

here are a few shots.... keep in mind these have been taken from above water and have to be edited so the true colours aren't seen..... I'll try to net them in a few days and get better pics.

April,
I've had angels that size die for no apparent reason. Don't sweat it. I think predator also. Doesn't look like post mortem feeding to me.

Just out of curiosity what are the water parametrers in the pool thinking about trying this on a smaller scale.

Keep it up! Thank goodness it wasn't a discus ;D. Do you ever vacuum the bottom or are you going to let it go natural all summmer?

Sorry to hear about the Angel Beth... could it be a temperature related problem?

Photo tip: if you use a polarising filter on your camera (provided that your camera supports one) it will get rid of the surface reflection of the water.

Hi sgt95b...

Just out of curiosity what are the water parametrers in the pool thinking about trying this on a smaller scale.

Last I checked it was.... 5/21/03

Temp. 84.4
us 268
ph 10.97

hey Wolf....

Do you ever vacuum the bottom or are you going to let it go natural all summmer?

Last year no! This year I did vacuum the bottom before I added the fish. I try to net most of the algae out that breaks loose from the sides daily. It seems like a never ending algae battle :-\

Hiyas Chong....

Not sure... but I don't think so, the temps do fall at night a little I'm sure but I don't think the temps played much in the death of that angel.
The camera is a Nikon Cool Pix 885 and I guess if I read the manual on that thing I may learn how to take better pics. ;)

Beth,

Glad to see your project is going so well.
Just wondering. Is the algae really a problem? I mean does it affect the health of the fish or could you just let it grow some? Inside it is an asthetic problem, but in the outside environment is it necessary to keep it cleaned out so much?

You can get a polarizing lense at any good camera supply. They are not very expensive. Just make sure you note the correct lense size of your individual camera and get one to fit.

Hi Richman....

The only thing I know is..... the algae breaks loose and clogs the pool filters :-\

I would think the algae helps more than it hurts... I don't pull it away frome the sides of the pool, I just net out what's loose ;) I would imagine it makes nice cover for the smaller guys and maybe food in there of some kind too ;)

I swear ... one day I'll read that camera manual ::)

Just thought I add a few pics and I haven't lost anymore angels to my knowledge. The pool project is still looking ok to me... the temps are coming up more everyday ;)

these pics were taken right around dusk on 5/28/03 and they sure looked happy to see those CBW's.

Hey Beth,
I saw something that might be beneficial to your experiment. It's a kind of bug whacker that goes over the pool to knock flying insects into the water. It's sold by Aquatic ecosystems and uses a spinning nylon line to knock the bugs out so they drop into the pool. A regular bug whacker might serve just as well, but I don't know if Discus like their bugs cooked.

Just a suggestion,
RandalB
