View Full Version : HEAVY DUTY 44 GAL. WATER STORAGE?
I BOUGHT A 44 GALLON HEAVY DUTY TRASH CAN WITH WHEELS AND COVER, I PLANNED ON DRILLING A HOLE IN THE TOP AND DROP A HEATER, AIRSTONE AND TEMP. GAUGE INTO IT AND WANT TO USE THE AGED WATER FOR WATER CHANGES. DOES ANYONE SEE A PROBLEM WITH THIS METHOD, IT SEEMS CHEAPER THAN BUYING GLASS TANKS FOR ONLY STORAGE. THANKS.

Hi Sony,
I use a rubbermaid 45 gal plastic tub for my Ro water and have had no problems. I heat the water as well in it.

Is this the one that the container sits on top of a wheel base? If so it is excellent. If it is a garbage can with the wheels moulded into it be careful. I had 2 that have collapsed (the wheels) because of the weight of the water.

I had one of the rubbermaid garbage cans that had wheels in the side - it lasted 5 months before rupturing and the second one ruptured after only 2 weeks. So I would not do it !. Now I use 55 gal. plastic drums - they were orginally used for strawberry jelly - and I have not had any problems - with the exception of my fish room smelling like strawberries :D BTW - I got the drums from a large food supply company for $10. each.

From Sony's post, it sounds to me he is referring to the Brute 44gal by Rubbermaid, the one that sits on top of the round wheel base. If so, I agree that it is the Rolls Royce of thrash cans and should last forever. They come in several sizes, the 44 being the largest.
The only problem is that it is very expensive at $39 with lid, without the wheel base (Home Depot prices). I have one because I inherited a wheel base and felt "rich" once. I use it to drain tanks into it, and keep a submersible pump in it. For storage I use the blue food grade 55gal bins, $7 dollars at local dollar store (once in a very blue moon).
Cheers, Francisco.

Francisco,
Rubbermaid makes a 55 gallon Brute Trash Can as well. I've got the 44 gallon at Home Depot, which is the largest size they carried, but you can get the 55 gallon, which I wish I had gotten instead. But I found some 55 gallon plastic barrels at the local Coca Cola Bottler, and got those for $10 each. Much cheaper than the Rubbermaid Brute, though it's really tough.
