Hi all- Is it ok to have an arowana 6 inches in a 75 gal with 10 small sized discus? the discus are big enough, so they will not fit in the arowanas mouth!! please advise, the arowana is in my angel fish tank know 10 gal outgroing it very fast!!!

Thanks in advance

I think you need more tanks, and to sit down and do some responsible planning and decision making.
Good luck, Francisco.

Its a pretty bad idea actually, they have totally different requirements :(

You have to have another tank to keep the Aro separately. The aro is a constant swimmer, it will disturb the discus and make them stress out. I had one 10 inches silver arowana in my 125 gal w/ my discus before that I had to give it away. eventhough the silver aro wasn't aggressive at all, it made all my discus gathered at the corner did not want to come up to eat.

About the same as putting a fawn in with a lion .

don't stress, put your arowana with the discus untill it gets so big that you think the discus will fit in its mouth. Contrary to popular belief arowanas are peaceful towards other fish that are not bite sized. They don't bully or chase them unless they mean to eat them. So youahve some time.
as far as water parameters, they can be adjusted to fit both discus and arowana (both come from the amazon system).
as far as arowana creating water movement that will disturb the discus- Bah!!

sorry,but i strongly disagree.
if you want to keep other fish with discus, select fish with similar requirements AND size(or smaller) AND temperament.

not to mention the fact that arowanas carry many diseases, have a different diet, really foul up the water, etc, etc.

But don't listen to me. you do your own research fatties.

I think you'll find arowanas are asian in origin. There are representatives of the bonytongue family on every continent (Australia has the saratoga), and there is an amazonian version - the arapaima, supposedly the largest freshwater fish in the world attaining a length of 4m. There are anecdotal stories of them eating children - monkeys that fall in the water are part of their diet. No wonder discus hide when they see one of these!

Cheers, Scott

The Silver Arowana (Osteoglossum bicirrhosum) is a South America native. It is the arowana most commonly available in the US. The asian arowanas do not come from the Amazon, and I would not keep them with discus in the same aquarium. The arapima is NOT an arowana, but they are also from the bonytongues family. Arowanas do not grow 10 feet long and weigh 300lbs like arapimas.

A 10' or a 4m fish sounds like a mini whale to me! ;D You could feed a lot of people with that thing! The fishing rod would only be bait as you would need 1/2" steel line for that beast.

I heard the black Arowanas are quite peaceful and can get along with discus well, but the silver ones are mean and will kill the discus.
