Hey all you NZ discus lovers! Please don't be shy, post here where in NZ you are located, if you breed and where you get your quality discus from!

My names Chris, I live in Auckland New Zealand. I don't currently breed, but may look into it into the future, at the moment my main goal is to keep them alive! I have a 3ft tank (yeh I know ::), going to "upgrade" into either a 4ft or 5ft tank) with 2 Golden Pigeon Bloods, 1 Red Alenquer and 1 Red Turqoise. I know a local mini/hobbyist breeder around my way where I got the Red Alenquer and the Red Turqoise from, the other two I got from a LFS (before I even knew that we had breeders here).

That's me!

Hey Chris,
What is the average price of a 3" Discus at the LFSs in the greater Auckland area?
Peter

Chris.L

Anywhere between $80 - $180 depending on the colour.

Come up to NZ after October :D

Hey Chris great to hear from you,
you are just the second person i've met in New Zealand who love discus!

Ok well i live in Hamilton at the moment and i am a student so funding is pretty low making the discus hobby just out of reach at the moment. My long term plan is to have a 3' quarantine/grow-out tank and a 4' planted display tank.

I recently bought a 4' aquarium second hand and i have it filled with various tetras at the moment. I'm glad i decided to hold off on the discus and do the reading because my tetras have developed a very strange (and seemingly rare) disease that shows up as black spots on their body and tail fins. I've lost the first lemon tetra after it being infected for about 3 weeks, i've tried plenty of medicines and my last hope is a medicine named "maracide" which i have been told will work, but ofcourse i can't find it in hamilton. have you heard of it in auckland chris?

anyway, once the disease is gone and my water parameters have stabilised (the ph is crashing and swinging), and my fish stay healthy for at least a couple of months, THEN i'll get discus!

What price did you pay for your red alenquer and the red turquoise? Were they juvenile or adult or in between?

I've been looking for ages to find a local breeder but they are somewhat limited!

Talk soon buddy,
Luca.

Chris.L
07-24-2003, 05:18 AM
Hey Luca,

I payed $30 for the Red Turqoise and $35 for the Red Alenquer. The Red Alenquer is developing green dots on him/her, can't wait to see what he/she looks like when he/she gets older!

They are all between 3"-3.5".

I'll have a look around for "Maracide" and ring around and see what I can do :) Good to see i'm not the only New Zealander on here ;).

C'ya,
Chris

Cool, thanks for your help Chris,

yeah i'm originally from tauranga and there was a guy who advertised some discus there for $40 each, they were of similar size, probably smaller. However the male jumped out of the tank and the female died of a broken heart so that was the end of the breeding pair ;(

i saw some juveniles in auckland two weeks ago when i was there selling for $25 so i think you got a good deal on those 3" ones. Does that guy/girl breeder have more for sale?

He had quite a few red turquise (3"+) and 2 Red Alenquers (3"+). He has about 6-7 breeding pairs. He does have smaller ones for sale. He keeps them all in barebottom tanks outside in a shed, except for a 5ft tank inside that he uses to get pairs, and he has various sizes of tanks in the shed.

Yes, he did give us tips etc.

Hi there all NZ discus nuts!

Just wanted to say hello and see what's going on in the discus scene over there. I love your country (despite giving you kiwis a hard time after a drink or two) and i plan to retire there with 300+ discus ;D (wishful thinking, i hope not!)

Where are the major discus suppliers in NZ? when I was over there I was hoping to see at least one aqaurium but did not get a chance...

Cheers!

Sounds like he is well setup, do you have his email address?

Hi Chong_Ly, sorry about the wallabies (huge) loss by the all blacks last weekend (lol sorry had to say it)

so the aussie aussie aussie post looks very popular, there must be tonnes of breeders over there? what are your water conditions like (when they come out of the tap) or what do you keep them at?

a pet shop in auckland called "jansens" has an impressive array of discus as does "hollywood fish farm" so they are worth checking out when you are next over :) Our smaller cities have some but they're more the standard runty type LFS ones as you would expect.

i've only been in sydney for 2 hours but it seems nice and sunny over there. in the city i am in at the moment (hamilton) we have a pub called the "outback" which is based on the australian outback, bit of a laugh.

well ciao till next time,
Luca.

BlueTurquoise
07-30-2003, 01:45 AM
Hi Luca,

We have one of the best water conditions out of the tap here in Sydney. PH7, 2-3 degrees of hardness, kh is 1 to 2 degrees. The best part is that it never fluctuates. Many people I know do straight tap water changes and do very well. How about over there?

There are lots of breeders and specialists here. Next time your over I'll show you around.

As for the Wallabies, EVERYONE knew they were going to lose, by George... ( ;D )

Cheers!

Luca
07-30-2003, 09:55 PM
That sounds pretty much perfect, especially the ph nice and neutral, constant.

NZ parameters (at least where i am) = ph7.8, dh0, kh 2

so our kh is the same, ph almost, hardness almost, do you find your ph crashes, it is on the soft side. Mine is very very soft and so i've got a big of a problem with it, I need to add some limestone or something.

Chris - any luck with finding that med(maracide) in auckland? Would that breeder sell his discus younger, for less do you know?

BlueTurquoise
07-30-2003, 10:10 PM
Hi,

It's because most of your water is from melted ice! It is very soft water. You can buy water hardenner products from the aquarium and yes we do get PH crashes.

it is not always ph7 out of the tap for us, after airation it is 7. After a day in the tank or after large feedings it does start to call to PH6.5 ish. But i's ok since I do 40% change everyday.

Cheers!

Luca
07-31-2003, 07:47 PM
Why do you think it is that it does this after being in the tank? Wouldn't it reduce in a storage container with airation? Is this just a natural occurence with soft waters?

BlueTurquoise
07-31-2003, 08:16 PM
Oh, PH reduces due to the nitrification process. It naturally lowers PH. Other factors include Algae growth etc. Since our waters are so soft it is very easy to reduce PH becuase there is hardly any buffering capacity.

After 2-3 days without water change and heavy feedings it *can* crash to PH6 etc but it hardly happens.

Luca
07-31-2003, 08:53 PM
mmm very interesting, i'd say we got that "melted ice" stuff here too. Infact on the news the other day they mentioned a huge "lake" was found underneath part of the sea (surprisingly) and some land at the top of the south island - amazing!

I thought nitrites were pretty much not found in a cycled tank? Ammonia is absorbed almost instantaneously from a healthy well-balanced system so that wouldn't give the nitrite a chance to form would it??

BlueTurquoise
07-31-2003, 09:15 PM
No no not from nitrates being present but from the whole process of turning Ammonia into a safe product. This makes the water acidic...

To keep this map alive and healthy - it needs to be feed "PINS".

BTW, I had to call NZ today (very long distance) on my cell phone to square up a bill that was not charged properly to my credit card. Anyway, I was put on hold...and heard Barry White's "Can't Get Enough of Your Love Baby". It was surreal.

St. Arnaud in the Nelson Lakes area on the South Island:

Of course it's a mildly alpine area so my wife would have a problem with that. She would prefer Marahau. Of course I've never seen Takaka and Tauranga either, and I am told I would fall in love with both of those places.

My total support for ' MY BREEDER" and recomandation !

Unfortunately - the success has gone to his head - and others are beating down his door for discus. NOW - he spends his time on a "golf coarse"; and with his wife and chrildren. Is this any way for a breeder to act ??

Hi all

If I tell you about myself I'll have to hunt you down and kill ya.

But here goes.

I have been interested in Discus for many years, but unfortunatly had to move away from keeping them a couple of years ago.

Im now back into Discus and of recent had 4 pairs of breeding discus, and a few other grow out tanks, but recently lost some :(, due to what may have been miss labled clear non toxic tubing. At the moment the tubing is being tested through the manufacturer.

So Im just a small hobbiest breeder at this stage specialising in Discus.

Now Ive told you about myself, it's time I went hunting ;).

Luca - you were wondering about the size of tanks. A 20 g = 24 inches; 30g =30 "; 33g -=36 "; 55g = 18 x 36". etc.
Most of my breeder tanks are 85 Liter / ~20 g. ... 24" x 15" x 15".
The 15 inch width seems to keep the parents happy and still have a run of 24".

Just woundering ... Why do you/anybody build their own tanks ??
Cheap - easy -

I just cut up some 82" x 82" sheets of 6 mm glass. These will make me some very nice 100cm x 40 cm x 40cm = 160 liter grow outtanks. OR spawing tanks.

Think about it.
There is always a surplus of used glass, somewhere. Just have to look for it !

Tools - glass cutter, tape measure, straight edge, silicone.

And nerves !!!! hehehehe lol.

Actually, it is very easy and rewarding to build your own tanks.

And , this will allow you to customuze the tank for any particular purpose.

eg . for cory catfish - I built tanks 15 cm high x 24" long x 40 cm wide. Low water pressure on the eggs. Worked great.

Also great for the first weeks of discus/angel fry.

Smokey

Luca
08-20-2003, 07:37 PM
Smokey, i would love to build my own tanks but have no idea where to find (cheap) glass.

Secondly, wouldn't you also need some kind of clamps to hold the tank in place whilst the silicone dries or do you just press it together??

Is a straight edge a tool that has a 90 degree angle in it?
|_ <<<---(shaped like that?)

talk soon,
Luca.

Smokey
08-21-2003, 03:57 AM
Ahhhh- back up and operating. Had to get a new keyboard. ;D

Luca/ other members: Glass is often found where you find it. lol.
I often visit glass shops and let them know I am in the market for glass; window replacement units, etc.

5-6 mil. is the minimum thickness. to use.

I have written a number of articles about cutting glass, finishing and constructing tanks. It is quite simple and very rewarding.
Mind you, I have been building my own tanks for over a decade, now.

A carpenters framing square "L" is used to square the glass sides. Clamps are not necessary. It is all in how you lay the tank up.

Just for interest sakes, would some one find out what glass is worth - local glass shop price. Now, prices will vary - finished glass [edges polished][ as apposed to buying unfinished]... labour costs.

And what is the cost of a 20/33 gallon unit.

Nice photos Peter....

Well, my husband, Scott is actually a Kiwi... he is from North Island though, New Plymouth, to be exact. He was born there, although he spent most of his life in Australia.

We went for 8 days to the North Island last year, but did not make it to the South Island. We will hopefully go again... visiting South Island this time. We loved it there... I love Auckland too... I can certainly see myself living there one day. Not at the moment, as there are no mining there :(.

I took all of those photos myself. My wife is in a few of them.

I spent the first 2 days in Auckland. Actually had a job interview in Te Atatu 2 hours after I got off the plane. Didn't get the job.

I never got to New Plymouth, Gisborn, 90mile Beach or Bay of Plenty on the North Island. I had wanted to, just no time to travel all of the great distances.

On the South Island, I missed the Alps, other than the mountains in Southland and Central Otega. It was below zero back home (upstate NY) at the time, so we had no interest in seeing colder regions when in NZ.

An analysis of levels of happiness in more than 65 countries by the World Values Survey shows Nigeria has the highest percentage of happy people followed by Mexico, Venezuela, El Salvador and Puerto Rico, while Russia, Armenia and Romania have the fewest.

“NEW ZEALAND ranked 15 for overall satisfaction, the U.S. 16th, Australia 20th and Britain 24th — though Australia beats the other three for day-to-day happiness,” New Scientist magazine, which published the results, said on Wednesday.

Thanks for the congratulatory appraisal smokey.

O'Dwyer, i regret to inform you that it is not actually the prestigious All Blacks playing this weekend but rather our national seven's team. The seven's tournament is completely different (so my flatmate informed me yesterday) and apparently his pet-hate is people who think the sevens team is the all blacks but the rules between the two games are very similar. In sevens each game lasts only 15mins total (and 20 for the finals) whereas in rugby each game lasts 80minutes. That's the biggest difference, and also, none of the current All Black's are in the seven's squad. Hope that makes sense?

FischAutoTechGarten

Crystal clear. I mean they're BOTH called the All Blacks. Of course a Yankee should assume they're different teams. When I was a child, I lived a few blocks from the NotreDame & Loyola College campuses in Baltimore Maryland. Both schools had Rugby programs. Neighborhood kids and I used to sneak up and watch the practices. So much physical contact and no padding.

Luca,
1 year ago I was counting down the days to the near month I would spend in NZ. Wish I were doing it again this year. Next time I go I'm spending a week in Takaka.

My wife and I are trying to buy a B & B., summers are murder, winters are dead. So who knows, maybe we will Winter (you're Summer) in NZ each year. Can't talk her into moving there, but she seems keen to that idea.

I thought one was actually called the "New Zealand Sevens team" and the other was called the "All Blacks"? i'm not that much of a rugby buff so i don't really know to be honest!

that's cool you could watch some of the training, i've heard that american's can't believe we don't use padding etc such as they do in your equivalent sport: football. this makes rugby exciting to watch due to the possibility of big hits, injury, blood etc and it makes me glad to watch it on TV or at the field and not be one of the players amidst it all! i guess a lack of padding is good for the spectators but bad for the players. my view is that rugby players are rather crazy for this reason.

i like the B&B idea, you could have discus tanks set in the walls, ones you can see from both sides even! maybe i'm getting carried away? who would run the B&B while you're away though spending winter (your summer) in America?

goodluck convincing the wife anyway ;)

No we'd come during your Summer which is our Winter (say Jan 15 through February 28th).
No one would run the B & B, we would just have a house sitter that feeds fish & cats and makes sure the automatic water changes take place and litter box is cleaned.

You mean to say that you have a completely automated water change system setup? I'd like to hear more about this... I know you can get a holding tank and pump the water in but how do you get rid of the old water and also how do you make sure it pumps just as much out as goes in?

Overflows leading to your drains Luca. That's how you do it.
