Hello there!

I first visited this forum yesterday, and have been reading it for about 5 hours now - LOTS og great stuff ;)

Im going to set up a new tank, and i need some last-minutes-opinions of the choices i've made. I have collected ALOT of knowledge from this forum - so thanx for that ;)

Every thought would be great!

Specs:

Tank: 300 Litres (about 80 US gallons)
Technic: Eheim Canister + 250W heater.
Deko: Sand/gravel, some plants and driftwood.
Fish: 5 discus (8cm), 4 Blue Rams, 10 Neon and 10 Rummy.

The way to progress:

Get the aquarium up, and fill it with gravel, driftwood, plants and tap-water.
3 weeks later, test to see if nitate/ammon is gone (and the filter is working). If yes, 90% WC with tapwater.
2 days later, let the fish into the tank

Weekly WC 1/3 with tap-water (directly) + cleaning the gravel for old poop/food.

How does that sound to you ?

Im from Denmark, so maybe my languache is a little funny ;D

HI,
Welcome, good to have you here! :)
You will need to provide ammonia to get the nitrogen cycle going. Use ammonia from the grocery store (no sudsy or lemon scent)
It may take linger than 3 weeks to get the cycle complete, test and retest.
I recommend no gravel = easier to keep clean.

I don't know if a 250 watt heater will keep the temp mid 80 F on an 80 gallon tank.

I like aquaclear or sponge filters better than canister filters = easier to clean and hold up better under power failures.

Also daily wc, aged water is best.

Hi Henrik and welcome to Simplydiscus

The tank you describe is better for adult or nearly adult discus.

If you plan to get babies this is a better set up

Thanx alot for you replies!

Im not planning to get babies on them.. just to watch them in their full glory ;)
I think i'll get some "filter-starter" material from my LFS, to speed up the cycling abit.
