When you first get discus should you get nice discus? Expensive, runts, what?

And lets say you get runts or bad discus, because you want to see if they can stay alive. How do you get rid of bad discus when you want to upgrade?

It is best to start out with the best a breeder can offer. If you start out with good quality, the end result will be good quality; if you start out with bad quality, you will end up with bad quality. Just make sure the fish breeds true and that it is healthy. If you start out with a runt type discus, that fish will more than likely throw smaller fish and smaller quantities of them.
Now if you want to see if you can keep discus, then go ahead and buy some cheap discus from a local breeder, just make sure that they are healthy. but the best way would be to buy quality fish, that way you know they will be healthy.

IF you pick a common strain like red turquoise or tangerine pigeon blood you should be able to get good quality, healthy discus at a very reasonable price. Buy from a hobbyist or breeder rather than a pet store.
