I'm converting two 75g cichlid tanks into discus tanks....I know that almost everyone on here uses sponge filters in their tanks and I intend to add some to my own....

my question is what should I do with the power filters that I have been running....one has 2 Emperor 280s, the other an Emperor 400...should I run both the sponges and the power filters? or one or the other?...what about the carbon, no carbon debate??...is there a filter insert that I can use in the Emperors that doesn't have carbon in it?...tghe only ones I've ever seen are the replacements from Marineland....would bio-balls or something similar work?

lots of questions I know.....lots more still to come too!! ;D

I think the emperors and a sponge filter for each 75 gallon. No carbon. You can modify (cut) sponges to fit the emperors and rinse and reuse nearly forever. Cell-pore makes a ceramic slab for the emperors that is terrific. (When I got rid of the emperors I put the Cell Pore slab in my aqua clears.)
