Hi all,
I thought i'd share this with you. Thought about putting it in the "you talking to me section " and will latter, but this ones got me real P'oD.

I went to get my fishing liscence, thinking I would reclaim some old passions, and do some late season fishing. They give you a little book of rules and whatnot.

Inside I find some warnings on whats safe to eat in my states waters... The short of it is...nothing that isn't bred and stocked from hatcheries. >:( Talk about depressing :'( :'( :'(

If this is the price for my states economic development we definetly sold the farm real cheap.

I know some of these pollutants are inother states and countries waters. How bad is it where you live? If you haven't thought about it or looked into it.... you may want to, if not for yourselves , but for your kids.

as for me, I pray the undeveloped countries don't follow our lead, though I know they will.

My state used to be known as the "tax you to death state", I think I will change that bumber sticker to the "tox you to death state" >:( >:( :'( :'( :'( :'(

Sad.. so very sad.

ps.. I wonder when the Amazon will read like my states waters.

I'm sure your fish are better than our fish. ;D Here they post warnings to stay off the beaches as the levels of raw sewage is to great for swimming.

Speaking of taxes our car tax triples the first of October here. >:(

Hi Jeff,
I don't know, This was only the fish advisory. Our state is bordered by Long Island sound, which is the perfect catch basin for sewage. we get those same warnings :-\, and of course theres the closed shell beds, and typical garbage washed up on the shore, and mysterious lobster and fish die-offs.

sorry to hear about your car taxes going up, Thats a big jump. we had out periodic tax assessments here and property taxes all went up like crazy as well!

Alright you 2. I will make room in my cave for you.

I have been thinking about this for awhile. Been thinking of moving to vermont. Their environmental laws are alot tougher but I am sure so parts of it are not as clean either.

I know how about we all pitch in a buy a undevelop nation. Well depends on how many people we can get it may have to be an island. We can call it Discus Nation or something like that.

Dottie,
The taxes dont even end when you die :(....probate, inheritance, death certificates, purchasing a coffin, etc are all taxed...

we need another tea party :(

Al,
recently I read that even commercially raised fish...especially the Atlantic salmon is almost worse than the wild caught salmon because of pollutants, and is recommended to limit your intake of the commercially raised fish...

Here in WI we have fish eating advisories, it depends on the county and body of water. There is a whole 20 pages of advisories from the WI DNR website.
Even the large body of freshwater, Lake Michigan, has many advisories.
http://www.dnr.state.wi.us/org/water/fhp/fish/advisories/Index.htm

A larger problem is the introduction of foreign organisms into Lake Michigan, such as the "zebra mussell". It has plugged water intakes and is now affecting the food chain. The water is very clear now because this mussell eats small organisms. However the biologists don't know how far it will affect all the fish. SOme of the small fish are becoming scarce because they don't have smaller organisms to eat, etc.

There is another larger fish, scarce now, but if it gets established, there won't be any other fish, it eats everything. :o

Charter fishing is worried, so are sportsman.

Hi Ardan,
there was an interesting write up in TFH a few months ago, on the zebra mussels and the great lakes echo systems... seems they initially Purified the water and the levels of pollutants in the lakes dropped, as well as in the game fish, as these pollutants bio-accumulating in the mussels instead. Then one non-native fish was introduced ... a goby, which eats the mussels.... this lead to the pollutants being re-introduced into the predatory fish populations at extremely high conc. as these fish eat the gobies. I'm probably butching the article here, but If I were a sports fisher man there ... I'd worry too! :'(

Al,
You're pretty much right on, the way I understand it too.

Now the zebra mussels are being found on inland lakes, because people have not cleaned their boats between lakes. I wonder how the whole thing will pan out. No one knows. ???

that's weird michigan doesn't list that many problems. there are certain areas where water flow isn't that great or was a polluted river that warnings are given but the general rule seems to be one meal of fish per week. i really doubt that you have anything to worry about i think they are just overtesting stuff. they discover how to test for something and say whoa that's kinda high, maybe we shouldn't eat that....even though people have been doing so for decades... just because they learned how to test for it doesn't make it harmful.

but too much of anything can be bad. if you wanna be safe stick to fish that need clean water to live like trout. trout can't live in polluted waters they die easily. perch is another.

IMO
mike

ps: my views maybe slightly warped....
i love to fish
but i'm allergic to eating fish...
go figure

Hey Al,

I feel your pain. If you want to see something really scary check out this site

http://www.scorecard.org/

I work for the environmental group that puts it out. Just put in your zip code and watch in amazement. :(

Thanks for the link Lou. It is quite interesting, really.

I don't think I have long to live though,.... after punching in my zip code :o :o :o

It is interesting to see the major polluters too, some of them are on the clean air bandwagon! (and they pollute quite a bit themselves) :(

Last year some of you may recall hearing about a large spill on the Rouge River (Detriot, Mich), well it flowed out into the Detriot river and i got a call to help clean up the Canadian side.

for several days a number of us picked up contaminated debri (mostly oil soaked plants, logs and general garbage that floated ashore). then they informed us that the chemical analysis came back indicating that the general purpose rain suits we were wearing weren't nearly safe enough. we had to upgrade the protective clothing to blue plastic chemical suits, 2 pairs of gloves (both to be worn at the same time), respirators and full face shields.

even after being all over the tv, newspapers and radio there were still people out fishing. it amazed me that anyone would even consider being out on the water watching people in chemical suits clean up the same waters they were pulling fish out of.

Here is an article. The asian carp fish threatens Lake Michigan, also sea lampreys.
There was a giant snakehead also found in Southern WI. (like in Maryland)
