should i have a bare bottom or gravel tank? does gravel increase chance of disease and with a gravel tank what filter is preferaable a canister or sponge filteR?

Hi, this is a huge debate, msot people on Simplydiscus.com keep BB (barebottom) aquariums, but some like me have a planted discus tank. But i also have BB tanks. Here go to these links:

Bare bottom or grave . . . . my sentiments exactly, lol.

I only have bare bottom tanks for my discus. The Africans have sand.

I prefer BB. I believe it greatly increases you chances of success in keep discus. ;)

As a beginner. i would strongly suggest bare bottom. get them growing well...and keep things clean and learn to watch your discus.
even as a discus person who has had them for sometime..i would still recommend bb.
Im sure most of us tried gravel or a few rocks or plants at first..but for the most part....we all ended up removing them as its far easier to maintain.
easier to add later when theyve gotten off to a good start...than remove later when thier already compromised.

there are many ways to make a BB tank look nice. You can paint it using American Accents Spray paint. they have this freckled paint that looks like sand and one that looks like gravel, etc...

I just painted mine. I used a spray paint called Flec stone. I had some sand left in the tank and I couldn't tell the sand from the paint when I was done. Really looks good. If I could only have painted under the black brace on the bottom. Uh well still looks good.
