I've never read a post with this problem before. I would put in a divider to keep the male away from her. Females will lay eggs by themselves.

yes...id separate them. think shes just getting stressed cause hes picking on her.
pull him out and see how she is if you dont have a divider.
males will nudge to get them going...she may not be ready yet to lay is all...
they do go dark with breeding colours.
is she pecking at the cone or by it? or making runs?
Hi,
Sorry to hear that :'(. I dont have any clue ...but i agree with Carol and April.
either put a divider or move the male out.
I seperated my pair before using a divider (egg crate) and the female laid eggs by herself on the other side.
Hmmm. Hope yours are alright. :)

Ronny

Yep sounds like pretty normal behavior to me also.
The "thing" that comes out and gets bigger should be the
breeding tube (for lack of better word lol)
I have read the discription " genital papilla " once but not have seen it used on the boards.

Hi, EIHAB:
I'm curious as to see what the outcome of this problem be. Have you follow the suggestions by separating the two? Please let us know. Thanks.
In the Bernd Degen "Discus: A Reference Book" on page 15, first paragraph, is a small reference to the female's ovipositor. Further in the book it explains the breeding process and shows colorful references to the birthing experiences. You should try to get a hand on this book. I've yet to finish reading it.
BTW, I too am seeing this problem as of today. I haven't really noticed it until now and I remembered reading your post. It took me 20 minutes to find this post. LOL

It could be "egg binding"
The article is from "The Complete Aquarium Problem Solver" by Kelvin W. Boyd"
Kelvin says "Egg binding can occor in freshwater fish during their spawning cycles. In their natural enviroment, a fish releases its eggs during the spawning cycyle. However, if the fish cannot find a suitable tankmate, has been fed a poor diet, or if the tank or water conditions of the aquariums are not ideal for spawning, a fish might not be able to release its eggs. The result is a buildup of eggs, causing the fish to look bloated in the belly. The best prevention for egg binding is to maintain optimum water conditions, and to make sure you are feeding your fish the proper diet for its species. When making a dianosis of egg binding, be careful not to confuse egg binding with dropsy. The main difference is that dropse bloats the entire body, causing the scales to protrude from the fish's body, while egg-bound fish are bloated in the belly only. Also, egg binding is usally seen in freshwater aquarium fish only.
SYMPTOMS: The fish is severly bloated in the belly only (not the whole body). The fish may also be lethargic, exhibit rapid breathing and have a loss of appetite.
TREATMNT: No medication is available for the treatment of egg binding. Attempts to squeeze the eggs from the body will usually damage the internal organs of the fish. Therefore, the only treatment for egg binding is to let the eggs be naturally absorbed into the fish's body. The process can be aided with magnesium sulfate (EPSOM SALT) soaks.
Siphon a bucket of tank water and mix in one slightly rounded tablespoon of Epson salt for every one gallon of water. Add an airstone, place the fish in the water, cover the bucket and allow the fish a 15-minute soak. Repeat this treatment daily until the fish begins to recover.
In some cases, the eggs may bind the internal organs to the point of rupture. If this occur, the fish will probadly die. Therefore, if the fish is suffering greatlyand its condition has deteriorated to probable death, you can try squeezing the eggs from the body. Net the fish and place it on a clean wet tower. Insert a sterile needle just inside the fish's egg canal opening th help clear the passage. Place the bally of the fish between you forefinger and thumb and gently squeeze the eggs out of the fish. Considerable pressure may be needed to extract the eggs. You don't need to remove all the eggs, just enough to relieve the pressure. If at anytime the intestines of the fish begin to protrude, stop immidiately! Do not leave the fish out of the water for more than one minute.
WARNING: The chance of this procedure being successful is limited and, the chance is great of killing the fish in the process. Therefore, squeexing the eggs from the fish should be only be used as the last resort.
I am glad I have not returned this book to the library....Hope it helps...
