I have an old 4-bulb VHO flourescent set-up that I used for a reef tank. The bulbs are 110W ea. and come in several different colors and temperatures. Could I use these for a planted 90 gal? I think I can re-wire the ballast to run 2 bulbs which would give me about 2.4 W/gal. The available bulbs are: a 7100K blue actinic, a "white" which is a combo 5000K and 7100K, and a "sun" bulb which is a tri-phosphor.

Any suggestions?

The fixture is fine to use! The Kelvin Id be using though is around 5500K. I would be be too concerned about using the 7100K blue actinic. Plants usually do not need the blue actinic kelvin. No problems using it. In fact, you may like the appearance of the tank better than just using 5500K. ;)

Im not sure about the 'sun' tube! A lot of times these so called 'sun' tubes are not worth the money. Regular tubes using the right kelvin will do the job just as well!

Thanks!

That's one item I can gladly cross off my "need to buy" list!

FCM.

Do you know who makes the ballast in your VHO rig?
