Hi all!!! Santa came early, replaced the digital camera that I tried to dribble off the concrete when I got home from Cary's. Cary, that's why I didn't post any pictures, when I got home, I dropped the camera and totally destroyed it. The new one arrived today so as promised I am posting pictures of the gorilla racks we have been working on for a couple of days. I was going to try to take pics as we put them together but hubby threatened mutiny so here are the sorta finished products.

Thanks George, I think we are going to like them. Just wish our floors were level. We had to shim them to make them level.

Very nice stand Susan :) Thanks for the pictures. :)

Are those stands strong enough to hold 3 levels of tanks ?

Ronny

Beautiful! Just one small problem! Your showing all this shelf space but no tanks! :(

Thanks for the pics! ;)

Ronny, I sure hope they are. They are very sturdy steel racks with cross supports under the 3/4 inch plywood shelving we have on them. I am putting contact shelf liner paper on them to protect from spills.
As for the tanks, well, we are painting the backs of them and getting them ready to go up and fill with water. Next project is extending the air lines into the side room and then the fun part.....buying Discus!!!!!

Susan,

Where did you get those racks? The ones I've seen at HD and Lowes only come with 2 shelves and I'd like 3.

Very nice set-up!

Brian, we got the 8 footers at Menards. They had 3 different depths and 2 different heights. And I think they had 3 different rail lengths, 4 feet, 6 feet, and 8 feet.

They make the Gorilla racks. I have been looking into systems for my garage expansion.

Hi all,
Hey Susan, nice setup! In the second pic, I see your orange tabby(?) also likes to read Simply's site ;D He's a cutie! I'm a sucker for cats, especially of the orange persuasion. ;)

Hi Steve,

Nice cat :) This is one of my new additions. Her name is Dita... Dita von Butters. Long story on the name, I won't get into it... but she and her brother Spaz are calling my new house, home.

Ryan

PS - Back to the gorilla racks, sorry for straying from the topic :)

Thanks Steve, I love my cats too and they really seem to enjoy watching the fish.
Ryan, Dita is just too cute!!!! Who said cats and fish dont go together?
Thanks Al, yes, we are very fortunate to have lots of space and since both of us are obsessed with this big round fish, there is nobody to keep our expansion in check...lol. Wait till we start on the basement!!!

I just purchased some HD industrial racks. They are 72"x24"x 48" (and 72")

Do you think a 24" wide shelf would need to be tied or braced some how
to the wall? or, would you think it would stand on it's known. I don't want to sy Timmber ::) ::) :o

If your floors are level, I would think that they would stand ok. You can always run a bolt down through the footer at the bottom of the end rails and bolt it to the floor. We used a level and shims to make sure ours were level. HTH

The Racks I purchased have no footer. I think I will set them up in a U shape and bolt togeter.

Chuck,

If those are the shelves I'm thinking of, they aren't the true Gorilla Racks. You may want to read these two links...

Brian,

Closest Menards in Iowa or Nebraska. It might be worth a road trip.

Update: The 6 foot rack is not strong enough (without reinforcement) for 2-125 gallon tanks. The tanks are just a little too narrow and the board bows too much so that rack is going to be relegated to the basement to hold 29s sideways. The 125s are going back on the nice stands, back to back. Oh well, it was worth a try. It could be reinforced with 2x4s notched to fit, but the show tanks look better on their stands. Oh well, it's a constant learning curve. ::)
