I got a pair of these at a dealer last weekend. They were the first wilds i've seen at a store (rare in these parts). Just had to pick them up.

All the owner could say is they were from peru. Is it possible to say which river they're from?
I've looked at loads of wild pics on the net, but none which i could definatley say are mine.

Comments and help appreciated.

Oh, I have to be the first to say it.... it's MINE. Wow. I lub it! Nice photography work, Makino. Very lovely Wild Tefe Green; I do believe this is a Wild Tefe Green only because I have a Wild Peruvian Green (that has a look of both brown and green) and yes they do share the same attributes and quite possibly the same parents and waters. My WTG has a hint of blue/green like your photo so this is my drawn-up conclusion. Anyone with more clarity and experiences feel free to hit me up the head with the correct verbage. ;D heeee....heeee...

Oh, Welcome aboard, Makino. You'll find lots of interesting topics and remedies and many more stuff.

Hi Makino,
If your dealer said that your discus are from Peru they are from the Rio Nanay for sure. There is another areas with discus like the Putumayo River but this is between Peru and Colombia.
For what I see your discus is about 4" and the color is not full yet but is coming out. ;) ;).
Here is a full color Peruvian discus from the Nanay river.

Angie, Angie, Angie...Tefe is from Brazil, Nanay from Peru....... ;) ;)

Hi, Alberto: That's what we have you for, Alberto! I knew I was going to blow out my candles! Those Wilds make me crazy! ;D I get them all confused from which rivers they stream from. Thanks for clarifying. And, yep! You're right ... The Nanay River Wild, it is. **Angie**

Angie, Your fish you got from me did come from the Nanay (as most Peruvian discus do). Tefe is in western Brazil as Alberto pointed out. There are some Peruvian discus that are not from the Nanay and they do not color up quite as nicely so the fish Maniko has may be one of them. The Nanay fish are an introduced population (escapees from a fish wholesaler) of mostly Colombian Greens that have that nice orange color. I've gotten fish from Colombia that looked very simialr to your fish that were shipped in as browns at 4" and colored up into nice greens as they matured. (browns are from eastern Brazil, only greens in Colombia, I told the wholesaler this, but he still sells them that way!) Ken

Hi Angie,

With all those river names running around, anyone can make mistakes ;) ;)

One of the most important things for me is the potential of the discus. You know when the wilds are shipped from South America they go under a lot of stress and most of the time the colors fade in our tanks. It take months for those fish to recover their color completely, of course, under good conditions (water, food, light, etc.).

For example I have posted last year in August the 12 bar discus that I got from Peru. The discus has a yellowish brown color on the body. After more than 5 months of good care, good water conditions, food, a under very low light the discus started gaining color up to the point that has a solid green pattern. ;D ;D.
This picture was took in August last year.

Hi Alberto, Ken, Makino and All:

Great summation, Albo. That's good to know. Your pictures are perfectly sweet. Wow.

I had a feeling that if the discus is stressed they will change colors. I see it in my tank! This is why I cannot even explain what a cobalt actually looks like, the difference of a violet reflection and the same with the ocean greens and the blue diamonds! ;D

My discus which is about 15 of them in one tank gets a tremendous load of playtime and pecking time. Most cases they play with one another and with the loaches and silver redhook too! But when pecking begins, I see the ocean greens changes to a marine or seafoam blue! The dark cobalts begins to lighten up and change almost to a purple color. They go thru this very often (especially when I run out of their favorite foods). ;D I promise them I'll try not to run out of stock. ;D

I get the feeling other than the juvies and babies, adults also transform (and as you said) under stressful situations.

Ken's fish are pretty near exact to those that I've gotten from you Alberto. They're just as plump and gorgeous with the same coloration. [Ken, thanks, but I didn't doubt you none the bit.] But when I introduced Ken's fish to the tank, the female you gave me darkened up a lot and is not a happy camper. She was extremely happy before the two that Ken gotten me arrived. Uhm... maybe she hates her own cousins??? ;D

Have you folks ever witness something like that? Oh, my tank is free from disease and wormies. No one has wormies any more. Other than the foods I give them. I'm on top of my tank every two or three days now that I have a vicious bioload. (soon to change...my big tank is coming in a few weeks). **Angie**

Makino,

I saw someone holding up a CD against a discus and they did an estimation like that. ;D Neat trick. I'd never think of that one. But I guess you can grab a fish in a net and use a tape measurement to measure.

At least you didn't "bet" that it was a Tefe' green! ;D
