I'm getting back into discus and am looking at ordering maybe 8 to 10 of them with the hopes that they'll pair up and breed. I'm wondering if different strains will pair up. All the pictures I see online show the same discus pairing up. Do I need to order all the same discus if I want a mated pair?

Any male discus may pair off with any female discus regardless of color/type. A wild Heckle will pair off with a Red Melon, a Pigeonblood with a Blue Diamond, etc.

For best results get 6 of the same strain. If you get 2 blue diamonds and two red melons and two snake skins it is unlikely you will have one of each sex. Even if you are lucky and do get a male and female of each there is no guarantee the male will perform. Sometimes you get unusual patterns when you cross fish, but many times you end up with heavily peppered pigeon bloods.
They are just like dogs or cats. :)

What are some of the better strains to mix that would produce good quality fry if they interbred? What kind of fry would a blue diamond and blue turq produce, for example? or is it always better to try and pair up the same strain?
