Anybody know of a nice floating plant that will tolerate ph 8.4 to 8.6, temp 84-86 and very hard water? The discus are doing ok in this water but I am concerned about the plants. The tank is a 175 barebottom.

Are you looking for floating only? If so, Watersprite is your best bet there. If you feel up to tying something to a small rock or something for the bottom, anubias and java fern will appreciate that hard water.
Best,

Another idea would be to pot some vallisneria, but they can get prolific under good conditions and try to spread around. The taller ones (like gigantea) can form a nice "canopy" with their floating leaves at the water's surface.
