Hi All,

I would love to have a planted tank, but don't want gravels. Thus, I am planning to plant them on driftwood. So, what plants should I use?

Thanks,

H Tran

Anubia species and java fern would be a couple of options. I am sure there are some others and you will get more suggestions.....

I've recently come to the conclusion that Anubias need a current in their tank. If your tank has nothing but a sponge filter don't get an Anubias, it'll die. I lost four tanks worth that way.

However, if you've got enough current to constantly move the water around the roots, Anubias are perfect. Don's other suggestion of Java Fern is another good one.

Best,
Phil

Some anubias aren't very easy to keep in the aquarium; pynaerti and gracilis in particular.

I'd stick with the barterii's - var barterii, var nana, var coffeefolia.

Some variations of Java fern:

Another plant you can try is African water fern/ bolbitis:

(it's not always the easiest plant to keep, but if the conditions are right, it can grow large and look nice on a piece of driftwood)

WOW!!!!

Thank you: Don, Phil, and walter. Your information is very helpful. I wonder if any one has tried this (grow plants on bog woods) before and can share some pictures as well as experience.

Here's a photo of a tank which I used to have setup in my office (I've been laidoff so the tank has been torn down). :-[ :-[ :-[

The piece of wood ran from the left rear down toward the front center. Covering the upper left is java moss and the rest of the wood was covered with the regular java fern. The two plants in the front corners are the Wendelov and Tropica varieties of java fern. There's a bolbitis plant on the left side behind the wendelov java fern.
