HI

I've been reading from this site for a couple of months now, but i decided to join since last saturday i bought 3 silver dollar size Marlboro red discus. they are by themselves in a 50GL/200L tank previiously cycled.

Ph: 6.5
GH: 6
Temp: 77°F/25°C

Filtration Eheim 2217 with prefilter sponge on the intake

I've kept and bred cichlids for over 15 years, but this is my first attept at discus.

I'm sure i'll learn a lot (as i already have) with you guys/gals advicing me.

Welcome nimbusv

I think your little guys will get a chill at 77. I would raise the temp to atleast 82.

Hi Nim, welcome to Simplydiscus

Definately get that temp up for these little guys. 84-86 might be better for right now. Three is a very hard number for juvenile discus. They do better in groups of 6 or more.

Discus are so expensive at the pet stores it's common for new discus keepers to only buy 2 or 3. (I did the same thing). Then the poor discus are either too scared to eat or one becomes a bully and harasses the other two.

Carol's correct, it would be better to have a group of 6 or more, and i would recommend keeping the heat approximately at 86 Degrees F.

Welcome aboard!

I'm fairly new here myself. I have found most everyone knows their stuff around here and give excellent advice!

nimbusv,

Welcome!

I agree with all you have heard here and also wanted to add that those 3 fellas in a 50 by themselves has to make them a bit lonely. A few more discus would be a great idea!

Also, is that ph and GH your natural water or have you altered it in some way? If not, you have awesome water.

BTW, if you are a skilled fishkeeper - 15 years keeping and breeding cichlids sounds just about like be before I started keeping discus - you will have NO problem making the jump to the King of the Aquarium!

Just keep listening and asking questions!

John

Thank you all for the warm welcome, i followed your advice and set the temperature to 85°F.

I actually wanted to buy 6 Discus, but the LFS only had 3, i'll buy at least another 3 this weekend, these guys are eating well, frozen bloodworms and brine shrimp.

my water comes witha 7.0 ph and 10 gh i am filtering through fluval peat fiber for it to get 6.5Ph and 6 GH in a couple of buckets.

You want GH 10 and pH 7.0 for juveniles discus. They grow better. Save the peat until they are laying eggs. You do get a better hatch rate with lower GH.

Always quarantine new discus for 4 - 6 weeks . . .

What kind of Ms numbers are the best for discus? I still haven't figured out how to translate GH to Ms...lol.

I know GH and PPM ( 50 - 100 ppm) Do you double that for ms?
