Have heard that you are not supposed to be able to drill tempered glass. Is this still true even with todays diamond drills, etc.

Is there a way to tell if glass in a tank is tempered or not?

Want to go to a drip system and don't trust siphon tubes for overflows.

No you can't drill tempered glass. You can tell if glass is tempered by looking for the tong markings on the edge of the glass that get left behind from the tempering process. Unfortunately you usually can't see these markings on tanks because of the trim. The only way to know for sure is by calling the tank manufacturer directly and asking. In general most tanks over 55g have tempered bottoms...most of the side glass isn't, unless it's a very large tank. Of course this varies from company to company.

Call the manufacturer and ask...it's not worth the risk of trying to drill it and ending up with some very expensive glass confetti! ;D
