Ok, so I am in the proccess of building my new fish room and had a crazy Idea for a filtration sys. I am going to have 3 tanks per rack for starters with room to expand to 6. I am planning on taking a 65gal rubbermade container and running an over flow from each tank to it. The water will go threw a floss bed, then a sponge bed and then a container of bio balls and then collect at the bottom where there will be one central heater and then be pumped back to the tanks. I am also planning on haveing a pre filter sponge in the tanks also. So what does everyone think? Will this work or do you think I need to do something else? All input will be accepted..

Nothing crazy about that idea. Lots of people have central wet dry systems. Get with it, sounds like a great thing to do for your fish.

This sounds fine but you will still be surprised at the detritus that accumulates in the bottom of a sump(Even with a prefilter). Design it so it is easy to lift out the media and clean out the sump frequently. Putting the heater in the sump works great. Just make sure you have large enough heaters for your entire system. A good way to do this is a temp. controller from www.jehmco.com and a titanium heater in the sump. This puts the temp sensor in the tank where you really want to know the temp, and controls the heater in the sump. Get 'er done!

I love the titantium heaters with external controller. Just like jaydoc mentioned, heater in the sump, controller in the tank. ;)

Ok so one rack sys is up and running, I'll get some pics for you. Let me just say, that was a job trying to get all the outlets and inlets set at the right place so one tank didn't empty faster or fill faster than the other.
