I have a penguin 170 bio wheel filter i used to use on my 20 gallon community tank. I think my 45 gallon with 2 sponge filters in it needs a little bit more filtering. I would rather not buy a new one BUT im weary about this filter. I had a bit of a snail problem in my old tank and DO NOT want snails in the discus tank.

What should I do to clean it? Run it in the 20 gallon full of water and a little bleach, and then run it with just water for a few days to clean it out?

or should the filter being dry for a week kill all snail eggs that might have been resting in there?

HAs anyone had to do this before? thank you for being patient with teh 1000 questions i have asked :)

What's inside? if cartridge throw away and run bleach through rest. If sponge you can microwave wet sponge for three minutes or throw away and get new one. . .
