That's pretty high, but it's been done. Lots of clean, warm, pH stable water daily keeps your discus healthy.

Hi Luke,

I have well water, and the pH around here is pretty high, 8.4, and it's not a problem. There are plenty of people that keep Discus at this pH and it's not a problem.

What is important is that your water parameters are constant; stable pH, and warm clean water.

Howie, what is your KH and dH? My pH is around 8.5 and 18dH. I have been avoiding getting Discus for the fear they will not do well.

Hi discuscraze,

Both my general and carbonate hardness are aprox. 5. You shouldn't be afraid to get Discus, simply because you have very hard water. Discus do not mind trace minerals in their water, but what they do mind are large swings in the water parameters. The only other issue to consider down the road is breeding, as eggs will not hatch in extremely hard water.

Daily water changes with warm clean water and your fish will be fine. :)
