Great site!

Ok I am new to Discus, I used to have a reef tank but the cost killed me so I left that. I happened to know some one who was selling his discus so I bought 9 for my 100 gallon tank they range in size from 6 to 12 inches (I will post a pic as soon) I went with a small less than 1 inch of gravel and on Amazon sword plant, I have two emperor 400s on the tank for filtration and do about three 18 gallon water changes week. So as for my question I want to utilize my old lighting for my reef tank, but I want to know if it is too much for them. Or what changes you would recommend. This is all on timers

9:00 am 2 55 watt att. turn on (dark purple color) for early morning
10:30 am 2 55 watt att turn on (Little brighter Blue / and really shows the colors) for mid morning
2:00 pm 4 55 watt full spectrum 10k turn on (white light) for day time
6:00 pm 4 55 watt turn off
8; 00 pm 2 55 watt blues turn off
10:00 pm 2 55 watt purple turn off.

Any info would be great thanks.

I keep a small lamp or room light on 24/7 for the the discus as they are startled when gong from full dark to light. Other than that the discus don't much care.

They do care about water changes . . . . . if you have nine discus over 6 inches in a 100 gallon tank you should plan on at least three 30 gallon water changes per week. This applies if you feed clean foods like flakes and vacume the gravel at each water change. If you feed things like beefheart or brineshrimp you will need to clean the tank more often.

Hi jd,

You got a steal at $10 a piece. Congratulations on your new fish!! :)

As Carol said, you're going to have to significantly increase your water changes.

Even if you can't do big water changes each day right now, you should be cleaning the substrate daily.

As for the water being so clear maybe its just south texas water? I dont have a r/o unit so I just age it (air stone and pump) and keep up with the water changes.

And I will try to get a picture of the the big discus, I have not measured him ..but the guy said 12 inches (Sounds like a line a have heard before) He is still shy and has not warmed up to me like the other ones. They all come up to me and eat from my hand. I have only had them for two weeks so I am not a pro but I want to keep them for a long time and make them happy.
