Thought this idea may be of help to someone.
The thing I use for the fish to spawn on is a 12" length of rectangular electrical pvc conduit.
I drilled a hole in the back about 1" from the top then inserted a sucker in the hole ..... I then siliconed a 1" length of plastic tube to the back approx 1" from the bottom of the conduit ... then added another sucker to this...... that gives a nice gentle slope to the top.
Then I just place the conduit at one end of the tank and press the suckers against the glass to hold it in place ....... I have used this successfully ever since I had the idea, and it eliminates the 'lost space' in the tank by using a cone.
If you need to use a mesh guard to prevent eggs being eaten, it's a simple matter to just pull the bottom sucker off the glass and slide the guard up over the conduit ... still leaving the top sucker in place to hold it there.
