Many of us have wilds and I would like to see some recent pictures of your collection and Im also wondering if any of you are having any breeding luck or activity ;)

This is a night time shot of my 125 Wild tank which includes 6 Peruvian RSGs from Aquatechnics, 5 Curipera from Belowwater.

Love them wilds ;D,

Your wilds are stunning (waiting for my special order ;D, with great anticipation ;D)....The Haraldi "Red Based" is my kinda fish :)....Whats the outlook on Heckels this year?

Ryan,
Your Browns are going to turn out to be your "Favorites"...remember I warned you ;D how addictive Wilds can be.

PS: Al your Altums are growing like weeds...love their personality, may have to expand down the road to adding more wild angels to my collection ::)

Nice looking fish everyone!
Ryan, are those all wild browns? Very nice.

Tad, very nice group!

Everyone,
What water conditions, and food do you use? Do you treat your wilds different than domestics?

Thanks
Ardan

RyanH

Hey Ardan,

Yes, they are all browns. Cool huh? They're only around 3-3.5" right now but already are showing incredible shape and color. I can't wait to see how they look as adults! :)

Although it may not be necessary, I try to keep their pH around 6.5 or so. I've been using RO to get it down. As far as food goes, they'll eat anything... ANYTHING. They're the most aggressive eating Discus I own and it doesn't matter what I throw in the tank.

Other than the RO, I treat them exactly the same as my domestics.

Ardan

Ardan,
I keep my wilds in an RO/Tap mix that keeps the PH a steady 6.5 just like RyanH :) , My wilds will also eat about anything that I throw in the tank including CBW's, Hikari Bloodworms, HBH Better sinking bits, Tetra Bits, Brine Shrimp and once in awhile some BeefHeart. The RSGs that I got from Alberto are some of the most aggressive eating fish that I have ever owned and have taught the Wilds that I got from Oliver "do not snooze or you loose :D " All in all I personally feel that wilds are just as easy to keep as domestics, if not easier!

Quinguyen and Dan,
Nice looking wilds ;)

PaintBallFan07,
In my experience though limited to just over 2 years of keeping wilds, I have found them to be just as easy or maybe even easier to keep in comparison to domestics. Mine will eat just about anything from CBWs, Hikari Bloodworms, Tetra bits, flake, beefheart (on occassion) and brine shrimp. Knock on wood the only problem I have had were gill flukes on 2 occassions and one that is currently in my diagnosis with internal worms. Otherwise pretty much hassle free. I keep them in a PH of 6.5, Temp of around 87F.

Salvaje, good to see you came to the forum! You will find valuable discus information here.

My water parameters are as follows:

23µs
6.6 pH
82şF
50% water change to induce the spawn

So far so good, Plantation water works great with my wild breeders !!!!

Hi Ax,
It's name was not made by me.Yes, I guess that from it's brown color and body shape with very few striation, however they turn to yellow color in good condition or in fighting mood, and it seems none has red eyes.

Hi Lee,
That fish is very nice. It has a very nice shape..but that name "bulldog" is not a real form to the best of my limited knowledge from that area or any for that matter. Its a marketing scheme. I have seen other schemes like this since I got involved in wilds.... It seems that some sellers are capitalizing on the common naming binge Domestic breeders have used successfully for years. Give something a fancy or unique name and the price goes up.

I find the practice in domestics frustrating, but in the wilds I find it very misleading. For example, Lately I have even seen wild discus on my lists called "Super Reds" and of course they are 2-3X more expensive than their "red" counterparts.

Hi Al,
I agree somebody do that for making high price, but this fish is very cheap, and actually I don't like that name.

I don’t intend to start any problem.

What I think would be nice is to have main groups as Wilds, Solids, Spotted and striated. With main characters in specs. So if it’s a Marlboro, but darker red or some other variation in the color, they give any name they like but always what group it’s based on, (circle spotted leopard is Spotted type, leopard is variation and than why you over charge – because its "circle spotted leopard"). The only one type that everyone can see is PBs base (because of the “dust”). I think NADA should create some guide lines, I am sure majority will agree to follow.

Just my two cents, don’t take it as fighting words.

Thanks.

Take easy buddy,
I don't want to have a fight here.
I don't like the name "Bulldog",that's ture! and I paid 100usd to buy a box of fish, plus freight, packing and other fee, it is cheap to me.
Otherwise, I think it is an odd looking wild morph, not all from Rio Xingu has same character, they come from a special group IMO.

then a week ago I was in LFS (small shop, nice knowledgeable owner) and he had two beautiful RSG , I was there with my wife and even so she is tolerant of my hobby I was not expecting her to say "look how nice they are and all we have are Orange ones (beautiful fish from Barb) in the upstairs tank. Why can't we have some like that"........ Well they are in the 20gl QT now..

My son was at the Vancouver Aquarium over the weekend. They have a huge Amazon exhibit there and when he got home he was all excited to tell me that they had some Discus just like mine. I said they can't be JUST like mine cuz they would be wilds and mine are all domestic. I looked up some pics of wilds to show him the difference. When I came to a pic of a Curipera, which is what it sounds like they had at the Aquarium, I had to admit that it did look almost exactly like my big Red Turq. Are Red Turqs just really close to their wild ancestors?! How can you tell the difference between them?

Why not contact Lee Newman curator of tropical fish at the Vancouver Aquarium. He should be able to tell you what type of discus they have. Lee is an avid hobbiest and expert on SA chiclids and a real nice guy.

Thank you, guys!

It is an 5-year old Olympus 4040. I am trying to get a not so static, more "dynamic" impression to the pictures.

I love to catch some "impressive" moments, fighting, agression, feeding...

furthermore, here are 2 pics of my second group of wild caught discus. In February I bought 5 very young discus named as "yellow" discus. They had only been 3 inch / 8 cm in diameter. They had no pattern, only light yellow overall color.

But in the last 6 month, they developed much more orange/red colored with blue pattern. The size nearly doubled...

I wonder which kind of origin the have. any idea?

AlexR
08-11-2005, 02:33 PM
Hallo David,

yes, I raised (still raising) those small wilds in the sandy bottom tank.

but there is only a few milimeters sand on the ground. In addition there is a ceramic driftwood imitation and in one corner 2 echinodorus bleheri (with partially some more sand). with this equipment, the impression of the tank is not so "naked"... :D
