Yellow Prussiate of Soda ??

I had the wife pick up some Kosher Salt at the grocery store, and it contains Yellow Prussiate of Soda as an anti-caking agent... does anyone know anything about this stuff?? is it safe to add into a Discus tank ??? I'm thinking it's trace amounts, and, at worst (?) might raise the ph a small amount, but ???

any ideas ?

If you are only going to add 1 or 2 tablespoons per 10 gallons it should be fine. I use it when I don't have anything else.

Think as soon as I get a chance, I'll pickup something else w/o additives and use this for cooking though :)

A high enough concentration of this once it's dissolved in water can poison your fish. Only use salts without additives. :) I use the Morton Salt as it's readily available.

I was afraid of something like that being the case, that's why I've relegated it to the kitchen like I told Carol.. only one thing... this IS MORTON Kosher Salt ??? Off to the store now for turkey and stuff... gonna look for some w/o the additive

I used Kosher Salt exclusively and never had a problem. (It's cheaper per lb than table salt)

Hey John,
I use water softener salt from HomeDepot. Cost just over 3.00 for a 40 lb bag. The bag is blue and the name says Solar salt, extra course. Just make sure it says sodium Chloride NOT Pottasium.

I should also clarify that I meant to say Morton Kosher Salt...many of the Kosher and Pickling salts are free of any additives/preservatives but some are not. Ones containing YPS are specifically designed for bakers, especially when baking commercially in larger volumes.

The problem with this Yellow Prussiate of soda is that it has the potential , under certain conditions to become cyanide.. cyanide is very water soluable and fish are sensitive to it... Many experts reccommend against its use because of this...IMO, .Odds are the concentration present would not harm the fish though.

as a side note...many reef fish are reportedly collected by using cyanide to stun them for collection to the aquarium trade...these tend to die shortly after.


as another side note... about 1/2 cup of apple seeds contains enough cyanide to kill a person. Thats probably why they taste so bitter when you eat them

I been using it for a long time with no ill effects. I don't have a water softener. I add it directly into the tanks. It's cheap when you have lots of tanks.
Make sure the bag says Sodium Chloride.

Hey Howie... The box I have is MORTON KOSHER SALT, and on the side, in little teeny tiny letters it says it contains YPS as an anti caking agent ??? On another note, thanks Brew.. another good reason not to eat healthy LOL Wonder how many apples you'd have to eat to injest enough seeds to make them deadly ??? hmmm... a good murder mystery in there somewhere I think :D

BTW.. only non additive salt I could find at the grocery store was non-iodized table salt ??

Dan, judging by the pics of your tanks/fish you obviously aren't having a problem with the water softener salt :) , but, I had always heard that this wasn't good ??? Is it the potassium one is bad and the chloride is cool ?

Hi Jim,
I use the one that says "Sodium Chloride". The cheapest bag usually don't have the additives. I heard that Potassium Chloride is the one bad for the fish. I have never used it and I don't have any fish to use as an experiment.:)

Hey Cos,
After reading this thread first thing I did was run into the kitchen and check my Kosher salt (Morton). Sure enough, there it was. Yellow Prussiate of Soda. I do remember asking about it and was told it was nothing to worry about. So I didn't. I used it fairly heavily on two occasions with no noticable ill effects but will probably not use it again so long as I can find some Kosher salt without it. Thanks for the heads up Jim
