Hi all,
I was doing a little insulation around the house the other day and thought I'd try something. It worked pretty good , so I thought I share it.

Sometimes you need a small shipping box , and just don't have one.. so one thing done is to make one by cutting pieces of foam board and lining a box with them..

This was a variation of that. I used foam 3/4 inch foam board for the bottom, and the top.. but the sides are sprayed in foam. The "stuff" expands nicely so you can make the insulation as thick as you like. Its easily cut when dry.

I have no clue what the R value is, but it looks like it might be pretty high (guess)

The stryo panels costs about $.50 for the top and bottom pieces. The can of spay insulation costs about $4.50 and would make a few boxes.

spray the foam around the bags.. It expands to twice its size as it dries... (about 24 hours)

remove the bags and trim away any excess insulation and the box is good to go.

One thing I would do differently is line the box with a garbage bag first so that the whole thing could be lifted out of the card board box and the lid tapped on once loaded with fish.

Haven't tried to ship yet, but I did a test run and it seemed to do well heat wise.

Hey Al,
I think you had better be real sure about that before you start shipping like that to your paying customers... In fact... I have an idea! Why do you ship me a few of those beauties of yours an I'll let you know if it worked okay or not.....!
Just a thought....
;-)
Looks great

Something else that you can do to get extra insolation is to take the normal roll insolation (the stuff that goes in the wall of your house) that is lined with plastic. Wrap the bag with it and tape it down. I shipped some fish to Gary in NY once when it was 12 degrees. Fedx over night. Water was sitting at 80 when he opened the bags.

well....im impressed...of course Brew has so much extra time on his hands to just sit and dream up these things. lol. it looks good. i know i tried to shrink a styro down once..or always looking for a tiny one.not that easy to find small or cut down to size. I guess the only drawback is you need to make sure you have it prepared 24 hours before shipping so it dries.

Great ideas Al and John! Where can I buy the insulation lined with plastic?

Bought mine at Lowes a couple of years ago. I have not shipped out to a really cold area FED X this year so I have not looked for anymore. I do not worry about it when going airport to airport.

Great Idea!

Now we just someone to do a shipping test run.
Does the bags stick to the expandable foam?

I agree with Peter. Ship me a few of those wild and i'll pay the shipping. Then I'll let you know if it works or not. Anyway, GREAT IDEA.
