Very nice, what stain did you use? It's all 1 X 4 stock?

the stain is minwax "polyshades" no base or clear coat required its an all built in one stain :) keeps me happy but is a pain in the *** to work with, exspecialy if you get it all over your hands due that it is oil bases.

I know what you mean, I stained and finished a shelf for my husband, what a mess! I am using "Red Oak" to finish a console that will hold a 29 gal tank, putting on Spar urethane for the topcoat.

would it be cheaper and easer to use a wood stain and then use pond sealer (clear) to gloss it up?

Hi Discusmad,
I finished my stand a while back. I used a red oak wood stain with a VARATHANE (SEMI GLOSS) finish. Bought the unassembled console at lowes.
Wish I had a digital camera to show you how nice it turned out.
