Just an observation, just something I've never seen...

I have a large piece of driftwood on which I had to attach nylon "legs" in two places so it would stand upright .. there's a 1 to 2 inch gap between the bottom of the piece and the BB ... As I was observing the tank earlier I noticed an adult laying completely flat on his side under the driftwood and thought .. OMG.. he's dying :( As it turns out, he/she was merely navigating his/her way under the wood, swam out, and is fine :) .. not sure why he took that route .. barely fit  exploring maybe (new to tank) was cool to watch though cause I didn't realize one could fit through such a narrow space :)

guess the ones in the wild navigate territory like that all the time. Its normal i guess ,
but I did loose my first discus similar to that, she got stuck under a partition, she had just paired off, and i put in temp partition to separate them from the rest of the horney bunch, can home to a dead discus,my heart broke that day, still blame my self for it.

They're known for doing so. I had seen my discus do this a lot. Mostly the wilds however. Once the wilds were in the tank, the others (domestics) would fear them but soon retreat and do the same as the wilds! I agree, it's playtime for them; sort of like guess what I'm doing, playing hide and seek. :D

One of mine does that quite often, to get food that has gone where she cant quite reach.

discus is lovely and naughty creature. they seem to like to challenge themselves by doing some stunts. for example, if there's some plant branches in their ways, they will bent their bodies and try to go underneath instead of choosing other ways. At least my discus always do that, which is quite interesting to watch.they do develop their own characters too. It's very fun to find out a lot from them.

I find Discus often like to navigate around tight spots...always fun to watch. It's becuase of this that when I place driftwood in a tank I try to make sure there's plenty of room for the fish to get by without getting hurt in the event that one or more of them get startled...of course this does little to discourage them from showing off their contortionist skills. :)

Some interesting responses :) Sorry to hear about yours though Blaze.. what a bummer that must have been :(

Interestingly, this is a Wild that was observed taking the ... ummm. scenic route ?? Like Howie, I try and make sure there's plenty of room to maneuver around obstructions, but like they say... the best laid plans... lol
