Hi all,
I have a friend who runs a LFS. He got a couple of jars of decapsulated Brine shrimp from one of his customers. He gave me one to try. I was surprised that even after several weeks of refrigeration, these still hatched out.
Anyone know how long decapsulated Brine shrimps cystes can stay viable?

Al,
How were the eggs stored after being decapsulated?

Gary,
They were mostly drained of water and stored in a jar in the refrigerator. I have been scooping out of the jar now for about 3 weeks and the hatch rates are consistently high.

Hi Al!
I've had good hatch rates with decaps that have been in the fridge over 8 weeks, after that I toss them for fear of bacterial growth, generaly I'll hatch them till they are about a month old then start feeding them straight to use them up faster.
Gary,
I store mine in a strong brine solution and rinse them before adding them to the hatch bottles.

Al,
My understanding is that you can expect to get the same return on the hatch rate for up to 3 months or more. The determining factor is supposedly the percentage of brine solution used to store the eggs...very low percentage will increase their shelf life.
I would be interested to hear back on how long the eggs hold up and also what temp. you are storing them at. I haven't played with artemia in a while, but I think that's about to change. :)

I would keep the brineshrimps eggs in fridge, it would be last longer! I had keep brineshrimps eggs in fridge for 6 to 7 months are still good :) When I open 16 oz of brineshrimps eggs i put the eggs in 3 to 4 oz plastic bottle and zip bags, put them in fridge. If you don't put brineshrimps eggs in fridge,. it would be go bad so fast.

Hi again,
I have kept the regular dry cystes in the Freezer up to 5 years, and gotten great hatches..These decaps I haven't worked with too much on a long term bases. They were stored in the Refrigerator.
Jason, Heres an interesting Note that I would hope someone could duplicate... I went to set up a new hatch of Decaps, and couldn't find the jar in the frig. I was royally Po'd ..I though I left them out all day at Room Temp..Looked everywhere and could not find them. Finally found them in the FREEZER. Great I thought..ruined. I decided to try hatching them and guess what... The decaps hatched after being frozen. If you get a chance try it and let me know what happens... That would be great if they do hatch consistently... I'll spend a few hours decapsulating a bunch and freeze them! :D :D :D

Good info Al..............I'll have to do a few "experiments" myself and let you know the results. I just had a hatch of blue ram fry so I'll need to start feeding them the bbs. The last can of cysts I got are giving me a very poor hatch rate so I've been decapping them first.
A while back there was some good info both here and on DAAH about decapping the eggs and storing them afterwards. When I was decapping the eggs back then I stored them in a VERY heavy brine solution in the refridgerator, as was recommended. I would do enough to last 2-3 weeks and didn't have any problems getting them to hatch.
Next batch I do in a few days I'll do some the "normal" way - heavy salt solution in the refridgerator - , some just rinsed and stored in the refridgerator, and then some just rinsed and stored in the freezer.
Of course then there's the other side of the coin..............why hatch the decapped eggs at all. There's those that contend that the decapped egg has more nutrional value than the hatched ones.

HI AL,
I find that eggs kept in fridge for a long period tend to hatch much longer than those that are kept at room temperature.
Do you realise this?

I agree with Bio ;)
Al that is great information,, you mean when BBS eggs packages or cans are not open, Are they in freezer for last longer?

Hi All,
Today after almost 2.5 years i opened my bottle of Decap. BS eggs and guess what !!! They have hatched 90% within 16 hours.
They were from BRINE SHRIMP DIRECT, now they dont guarantee hatching Decap eggs. They were stored in the fridge at 5 Degree Celcius.
I dont know if they will grow to adults as i have always had bad luck, but i decided to try again after 2.5 years.
Info i thought i would share with all of the hobbiest here.
Arpan.

I have found that keeping my bse in freezer while not being used has helped in keeping hatch rate up there. After I open a 16 oz. can I keep it in a canning jar with a old lid and in the frig. Take it out and get the eggs I want to hatch then put it back in frig.

Hi Arpan,
These were their non-hatching decaps?... thats really interesting! I have some here...I think That i'll give it a shot too...that would be really great if they hatched!
thanks,

Wow, this is certainly good news for me. I wasn't even aware that you could keep de-capped eggs, I always immediately put mine in a hatchery after de-capping them. It means I can now do a large batch instead of lots of small ones.

HI Al,
NO - it was their hatching shell less eggs. This is what i got with me when i came back from US for good to INDIA. But now they offer the non - hatching eggs.
Just wanted to share with all that the Decap eggs either bought or decaped by us could be stored for a long time.

Thanks Arpan,
I was hoping otherwise but its good to know that the hatching decaps are good at least 2 years!:)

Hi guys,
Has anyone ever tried to decap Brine shrimp eggs??
I found a method on www.killies.com. It's in the introduction section.
Can someone who has spare brine shrimp eggs try it out and see if it works??
I would like to know your success and what types of apparatus you have used??
