Crazy, I think there is approximately 230 cu. inches per gallon of water. If you take 48*14*38 (25536) and divide that by 230 you should get 111.026. I could be wrong on the number of cu. inches per gallon but thats the number I have been using. HTH

Correction on my calculation.:)
119.887 gallons

The formula is: LxWxH divided by 231

Me four!!!!

Also a tank manufacture once told me that if it's a glass tank with molding it might vary due to the molding being about 1-1 1/2. I had some cube made like the ones Dan posted and the glass size is 18x18x18 = 25.25 gals and glass including the molding is 18x19.5x19.5 = 29.63gals

Sorry for being so technical but something to think about???

I bet those are outsided dimensions and the tank is sold as 110 gallon - but probably holds less than 100 gallons. Measure the INSIDE length x width x actual water height then divide that number by 231 to find actual gallons. :)

47.25 x 12.25 x 36.00 = 20837.25 divided by 231 = 90.20 gallons

Thanks everyone on your replys the marjority got 111 and i was thinking it was a 110 so ill just go with the marjority replys and Carol so you think its only a 90 gal? Well whatever it is i know i can grow my juvs in there lol and oh yeah Brigitte yes it will be hard for me to clean to the bottom but ill find a easy way lol.

It is sold as a 110 - but does NOT hold 110 gallons of water. This is important if you are trying to medicate.

Yes I agree... my tank was sold as a 100gal but measuring the glass only it holds 90 gallons

As Carol said, it's very important to measure the inside dimensions of a tank and for the hight go by the water level, not the actual hight of the tank. My 50gal only holds about 44gal when filled to the bottom of the top trim. I was a bit disapointed when I got around to figuring the actuall capacity.

O ok thanks for info guys but i would never medicate fish in tank that big i would remove sick fish to little 20 gals to treat but i wouldn't let my fish get sick in the first place i just love them 2 much lol.

Kenny,
The actual measurements of my cube tanks are 19x19x19.
The formula that my tank maker uses to figure gallons is LxWxH devided by 231.

Hey Dan
I could only go 18" glass due to the cost of 19" glass have to be thicker according to the tank makers.
BTW Red turks that I got from you is turning out real nice!

y divid by 231????

That's right. L x W x H divided by 231.

Of course if you really want to get anal...http://users.pandora.be/eforum/emoticons4u/happy/542.gif...for every item placed inside the tank...filters, heaters, etc. (not to mention the fish themselves) you can continue to subtract the actual number of gallons that actually end up being inside the tank...beyond that you can also factor into the equation the actual fill line used when placing water inside, which can differ on a daily basis.

L X W X H in inches gives you the volume of the tank in cubic inches. You then multiply by a conversion factor to get volume in gallons. that conversion factor is 1/231 or .004329. remember that multiplying by a fraction is the same as dividing by the denominator ( lower number). Therefore, L X W X H divided by 231 = volume in gallons.

Carol is correct on two points:

1. Actual volume is the inside measurement not the outside. ( remember that height is not how tall the tank is but how high you fill the water)

2. Most manufactures round the number up to the nearest 5 or 10.
