Im planning a planted discus tank, the tank will be aprox 48l by 12w by 18-24h- havent decided yet.

My question is , will 12" be wide enough for a discus tank? unfortunately this is probably about the widest i could have

Also I was thinking of adding 4 adult discus, probably browns, does this sound ok for that size tank?

Many thanks

Sounds like a 55gal. tank. 4 adult discus would be fine in a tank that size, but 5-6 would be better. Discus like to be in groups and establish a pecking order amongst themselves. 6 adults would spread out the agression in the school. Look around on this forum and you learn more.

Agree with gators.. most hobbiest tanks are only 12 to 13 inches wide until you get up to the larger sizes or have them custom built, and Discus do fine in them. The 18in tall would be a 55 (?) and the number of Discus would somewhat be determined by how much you're gong to have it planted. A bare bottom, or even a gravel bottom 55 gal will support 5 to 6 adults with adequate filtration, but the live plants may complicate that somewhat.

If it's heavily planted 4 may be ok since there will be plenty of personal (or hiding) places, but 5 and even 6 are better numbers for a Discus tank,

Thanks

Id prefer it being 18 tall as then I can get more light to the bottom plants, is 18 inches tall enough for discus?
