Hello All,
I live in Washington State and just started getting Discus. I have raised livebearers since the 70's.
My question is how do you measure a discus? I don't mean dive in the tank and use a tape measure! haha
I mean is it from the nose to before tail or from nose to end of tail?
Thanks,
Frank

Welcome Frank. I take tape measure up to glass.
Don't get a real acurate measurement but close as they come to glass when they see me. Just a matter of waiting for them to turn sideways.
People from what I've seen on here measure both of the ways you mentioned.
Which is right way I guess is in the eye of the one with the tape measure.

Come introduce yourself here........................

There are two basic measurements for fish.
Standard Length (SL) is from tip of snout to the caudal pedencal (Where the tail attaches to the body)
Total Length (TL) is from tip of snout to the end of tail.
The most commonly used is SL

Buyers think of discus in terms of body lengths. Sellers think of discus from the nose to the end of the tail. I'm a buyer, but a seller once explained it to me this way: When you measure your height, do you include the feet?

He had a point!

Hey Willie,
good point, but then again when you measure a dog do you include the tail? Personaly it doesn't matter to me which way it's done as long as they say which way their doing it. I didn't know the body length way was called "standard". Thats good to know.

as someone once said "i could always cut off the tail"

form that point iv'e always asked if lenght includes tail.
but i think the standard is from nose to where tail starts
