Hi there,

I had a minor fiasco with my heater (malfunctioned) and the temp dropped to 25C in my discus tank. I have fixed the issue, but now I am wondering how fast I can bring the tank back up to normal temps (30C)?

thanks.

Usually takes about 24 hours, try putting an extra heater in the tank as a backup, just in case for some reason the main heater fails. (A must if you use the Visitherm Deluxe heaters, as they are known to break after a while)

I can raise it from 25 -> 30C in a day without hurting the fish?

generally there is some stress involved in a huge temperature flucuation, my suggestion is maybe raising the temperature little by little.

They'll be fine - just set the heat at 30C and plug it in.

thanks Carol, thats what I did.

The baby discus are doing fine.. the water is back at 29C today and they are happy grazing and playing around.

Exactly. Often you'll see advice like "raise it 2ºF a day until it is at the right temp". That's totally unnecessary IMO. Just set it and walk away. When fish are landed the water temp in the bag is often 10ºF or more lower then the tank temp yet the fish do fine being plopped into the tank. A jump in temp of 5-10ºF or C over the course of an entire day is hardly going to be noticed.

You have to be careful when lowering temperature, but discus can tolerate going up in temperature.

When I perform my daily 25% wc, the new water drops the tank temp from 75-76 down to 72-73 ... a three or three and a half degree drop over fifteen minutes.

I don't like it, but the fish really don't seem to mind a bit.

Hi,
Just a suggest, if you are keeping discus your tank's water temperature should be at least 86 degrees. Water temp of 75-76 degrees is on the cool side for discus. Do you store your water for WC's in a storage tank? If so you might think about adding a heater and setting it at 86 Degress. If you don't have a water storage tank, then you might want to increase the water temp using more warm water from the tap, when mixing water for your WC's. Best of luck......Al (RiverCitiDiscusII)
