If you really want to paint use a good water based paint...I don't paint anymore..I use 1/4" lite blue foam insulation from Home Depot..Looks good and helps keep the heat in.

I just used Scotch tape, been on the tanks for years now..Or if ya don't want to do that, find a sign shop and ask to see their cheapest vynal material that they use to make signs..it comes in all kinds of colors and it is easy to put on

Thanks Mench. Have another tank set up coming up here in a few weeks so going to keep trying different methods. I really want to insulate mine also. Over the course of years not only should I save on my power bill but my heaters should last longer.

Is blue the only color for 1/4" insulation ? I want to put blue fish in it and i dont think blue on blue would look very good. I want the fish to stand out. This why i asked about paint options.

I've seen pink and white. Latex paint works best in white.

some folks over at DAAH are using a paint called "Decorative Effects" by Valspar. you can get it at Lowe's. it comes out looking like sand. best and most attractive thing i've seen. i'm gonna try it. you can find the thread and pics by going to:
www.discusasahobby.com/forum
in the search box, type in "valspar".
that insulation idea is a great one. gonna use that over the paint. thanks mench!
pat.

I used the MATT Black or MATT Blue car spray paint that you can buy in a tin for around £2.50. Turn your tank on it side, clean it with white spirit and spay it. You get a very good even finish and it wont peel off. And it's very easy to apply on the outside of the tank.
plus it drys really fast allowing you to put multiple coats on fast doing lots of tanks at the same time
