Have any of ever made a home made external filter?

I've thought about using a heavy duty plastic bucket, putting a power head in at the top and another powerhead in my tank pumping water into the bottom of the bucket. I was going to use different grades of foam, with the biggest at the bottom, going to the fine stuff at the top.

By doing it this way my filter area is actually huge!

Do you think that this is worth a try?

Kind of like a homemade sump. There are a number of methods to use, each have disadvantages/advantages. Btw, I make all my filters. If you get a chance, check out my yahoo albums by visiting my 'home' page.

Willied,

If I follow you right.. you'd better hope both powerheads pump the exact same volume of water 24/7.. better to go like Roncra suggested and use a sump type system where the water flows out of the tank and is pumped back in from the sump.. make sure you have an overflow device rather than a syphon so the tank doesn't empty if the power goes off..
