The discus will probably end up eating them http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/7/7_4_17.gif

If you buy alot you prolly have a better chance at keeping some around for a bit. How big are your discus? If they are smaller they might not be able to eat them.

I want to add shrimp to my 55 also. How would you QT them before adding them? I like mine in alfredo sauce with brocolli! lol

you can combine discus & shrinp if there is a lot of plants so the shrimp can hide

Yes you can, I have had shrimp in my tank for 6 months with no problems. They hide so be careful when cleaniing. I recently added a mountain shrimp from Asia to go along with the common Algae eating variety. Good luck

Great snacks for the discus while they're watching t.v.:antlers:

If you have a planted tank with plenty of hiding spaces for the shrimp, you might be okay, note might (as in, some may survive).

I bought some amanos once. Only one made it, and even he only made it for a couple of months lol. My rams and discus got together and made a nice meal outta those guys. One decided he'd rather try his luck OUT of the tank so he jumped lol.

Also, if you keep your water around 6ph and low TDS. The shrimps' shell will weaken and it will die. I bought a dozen grass shrimp to feed to my fish. They didn't touch them until they died 10 days later.

I'm looking at getting some red nosed shrimp for my planted tank, no one seemed to answer the quarrantine question. I plan on keeping them in a planted 10 gal til they are of a good full size, then into the discus tank. I figure with all the driftwood and plants, they should be OK.

Wolfbane, i qt the shrimp the same way i do fish. Separate tank for two weeks, then i throw in a cull ( inferior fish) with them for another two weeks. If everything still looks good after 4 weeks, they go into my main tank.

After reading at this site and others, plus I need to order plants anyway from a place that also sold shrimp, and the shipping costs wouldn't be much different, I ordered some cherry shrimp and some amano shrimp to try with my discus. I put them in with some 2.5 inch Juvi culls to quarantine them, and to see how they would do with discus. The Juvis slowly ate them all. These were cherries and amanos bigger than 1 inch, so I hoped they'd have a chance. They didn't. This was in a very heavily planted tank with lots of cover. They ate tons of algae while they lasted, but the discus picked them off whenever they exposed themselves.

I can't imagine them lasting long in with the adults. Maybe if I had a breeding colony of cherries, I'd try it again (amanos don't breed in fresh water).

Don't do the blue lobster with fish you want to keep. They will attack fish.

I have some amano shrimps in my planted tank with my 3~4 inch discus. My discus don't even look at them. Although my shrimps are pretty big, about 1.5 inch.

i got a ghost shrimp with the discus.. He's doin just great , they are doin great...

The only problem is that shrimps cannot tolerate meds used for discus, so if you got to treat the fish, move the shrimp and make sure you filter with carbon before moving them back...
