Hi All, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and yours...

I wasn't sure whether to post this here or in the water section :D but I'll give you alittle story that's sure to make you smile the next time you think you've had a bad fish day :D .

So, I'm not feeling well.. flu, cold something hits and I finally get up the courage to ask my boss if I can leave work alittle early. I get home and pack myself directly to bed but I have a bad habit of waking and feeling like I should be somewhere or there's something else I need to do so that's exactly what happens....I wake in a panic that I need to do a wc. Oh...how those discus have a hold on me ;) given I think the kids (18 and 15 year boys) starved that same night ;) .

I argue it out/beg with my eldest son who's the reason I'm in discus to help me with my wc but currently has no interest in fish or anything to do with fish, it's only the two of us home so I finally resign myself to struggling on my own. I have a 150 gallon polystyrene barrel that I fill nightly to use for my next day wc which unfortunately was empty :smash: . I turn on the taps which runs the water through several various filters and therefore takes about an hour and 45 minutes to fill. I'm not thinking so I fall back to sleep:sleep:  and then some!

The water barrel overflows for two whole days and nights. I should say... that when I get sick the other occupants become automatically dumb. On the third morning I wake up thinking I hear the doorbell...now looking to see if I'm alone I end up in my husband's office where the piping for the drain and fill is run downstairs through a corner of his closet..and vaguely hear water running  . I'm alone in the house... what could be running?

All of a sudden it occurs to me.... oh my gosh the water barrel:shocked: :scared: :puke: . I beat a path downstairs which is fully finished but because we recently moved into this house... there are still boxes and items strewn everywhere still waiting to be addressed now totally submerged under about 18 inches of water. The drain would have been a great help but a piece of wet cardboard covered it :( . So in a panic I run for the shopvac... I could have used a hundred. It holds only 8 gallons and is heavy as all heck when it's full which took less than a couple of minutes to fill with the amount of water I was sucking. So now I'm crying:waaa: ...I don't feel well... I'm wading around in water to my mid calf of never ending water.

Finally....big sigh...:fried: after several hours I manage to reduce the water to just a slushing sound under my feet. I run as many fans as I can find but before I go back to bed... I resign myself to turning on (powerheads, heaters)the barrel since it's now well more than full which I do by pushing on a switch in the office closet upstairs and go off to bed...tired, upset, crying headache and still not feeling well....finally some rest... while my pump downstairs which is still plugged in, pumps 150 gallons of water upstairs and floods my husband's office  .

Remember this: Over this past weekend, I pestered..stomped my feet..tried anything that would get my husband to replace the ceiling tiles in our basement because they were previously stained through another flooding incident from my son's room.... 'cause we're done making floods...learnt our lesson  . The tiles I chose weren't cheap on top of all. Should have gone with plastic!

Fortunately and unfortunately, my husbands office is wood plank flooring so the water didn't stay long..oh.. still enough to have to shop vac but the rest leaked through and downstairs to the basement raining through.... yup..you guessed it... :wasntme: the brand new ceiling tiles and soaking what I'd just finished cleaning downstairs.

So when you think you've had a bad fish day....water day or you need a reason to give up on Discus.... you can think of me :D. I survived it.

Not hoping for diamonds now :bomb: ....hoping Santa brings me new ceiling tiles :D LOL.... life can be funny!

My husband, well.... he's away on business....and I'll tell him soon.... I promise :argue:  . LOL! this should be good.

Enjoy a great day!!

Take care

Tina

Tina, what an ordeal! I feel so sorry for you. I sure hope everything turns out ok. It great of you to share that with us. Did you ever consider when the water was 18in deep to let your discus have free run of the house, just for a change....just kidding. Have a Merry Christmas.

Tina, that's awful!

Over the weekend I was house-sitting for my aunt. I gave her one of my 55 gallons and I decided to clean the whole thing out while she was gone. I was refilling water from the tub to the tank with a pond pump, and stupid me left it unattended. I thought I heard something from the kitchen, so I walked into the living room...

The hose had slipped out of the tank and was pumping water into her living room carpet! I would guess about 5 - 10 gallons made it into the floor before I realized it. I spent two hours with a vac trying to suck it all up, then put fans on it. I felt awful.

It's definitely nothing compared to your story, but it was my first major spill since keeping fish, and it makes you feel really awful. I wasn't sick before it happened, but I felt a little nauseous after :(

Tina, Your story beats all of my water spills! I feel for you.
Tell the husband and get it over with!

I hear you about lazy kids. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!

Military school is where I'd like to send mine!

Some day..................Far off in the future you'll laugh about this. Okay real far off in the future!

Part of the healing part is just sharing it.

Hang in there and remind your husband about that part in the wedding vows that reads......

"to have and to hold from this day forward, for better or for water changes gone bad, for richer, for poorer due to buying to many discus, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish my discus; from this day forward until death or water bill makes us part.

I just feel awful if the hose falls out of the tank while pumping water in. That is nothing compared to what you went through!!

House insurance cover something like that? What a time of year to have it happen too!! Couldn't be summer when it's nice and warm and things can dry out faster, heh?

I'll remember your plight when I mess up again here. Hope it goes well with your hubby.:(

Ouch! Srry to hear this. Have you seen this for storage tanks by any chance? I use it and its great. No more flooding the storage tank. Not sure if it will work thought depending on your setup.

Thanks for the condolences everyone :) . Yesterday wouldn't have been a good day for me to share this..well not sanely anyways ;) but it get's easier.

Wow...great idea, Ronca. I think it will work. I'm going over to our home depot following work today. Maybe if I have a plan in action when my husband arrives back, he won't be so upset

I forgot to mention that just 2 days before my ex-husband sent 2 flood alarms home with my son.... some kind of voo-doo maybe :D of course they weren't in action.

Greg, I'm telling him. I started to...really I did and then he started to say no biggee... stuff happens lonnnng before I was done... I thought I'd leave him in a happy mood until I can guide the insanity in person plus I have to pick up and replace the stainless knob that we melted on his brand new gas stovetop and get the garage working again after snaping one of the cables that works the automatic door.... yikes!!!! My husband did attend military school... it's not making this any easier :scared: :D .

Actually my husband is a good guy. He's admittedly not into fish..not discus..not any fish...they're all just fish to him but having said that he has developed a water change system easy for me to use and has been supportive with all the trials and troubles that came with starting into discus for me so chances are he'll understand..... I think :D Funny how all this should make him feel... he travels for work!... gulp!

Love the comment about letting the discus have run of the house....good thing I didn't think of that.... nah, just kidding!

Take care all and thanks again

Tina

OMG! You poor thing! You could always have a handy person replace the tiles while DH is away and pretend nothing happened ;).

lol... Tina... thought it was bad when I accidentally (stupidly) turned on my fill pump then left the house and went grocery shopping a few months ago :o I only spilled 100 gallons or so over the top of the tank, thru the wood floors (first and second floors) and into the basement :( Was raining in the dining room when we came home :(

Don't know how big this room is, but 18 INCHES DEEP !!! OMG had to be several hundred gallons there :p You're the hands down winner :D :D

I think what you need to do is stay sick a while longer... stay in bed, moan, act uncomfortable, maybe even dab some water on your face every time he's about to enter the room.... he'll feel so bad for you he'll probably have those ceiling tiles replaced in no time :)

LOL

Take care,
Jim

Yipes!! My sympathies goes to you. Hey, if hubby is a good sport, he'd make you worry less and get the damages fixed right away. Make sure you fix him his favorite meals for the next two weeks. ;)
