I had added 12 shrimp to the lightly planted disucs tank. Had an accident of either CO2 or lack of dechlorinator and noticed that I was down to about 6, so I went to get some more shrimp.

Got 8 new shrimp, added them to the tank and BAM, 3 were eaten before I could even get a net back in the water to save them. I netted 3, 2 more made it to hide behind the filter spray bar.

Expensive damn sushi.

LOL... Such an experience to be had, which I had... with both angels and discus gobbling those poor tiny shrimps. I felt bad, too, Anona. I began scooping them out but they are swift. Either they jump into the container I used to fetch them or they jumped out of it and onto the ground. **Angie**

I had 4 dozen neon tetras dwindle down to a few, could not figure out what happened until a huge fat synodontis showed up (I thought it was still a baby). Bon apetite with the shrimp, I've had lots of different fish snack on ghost shrimp (I use ghost shrimp to cycle tanks). I was thinking about putting Bamboo shrimp in my discus tank, put some ghost shrimp in the tank as a test, lets just say it wasn't pretty for the ghost shrimp. I was amazed how fast a Discus can move.

I was on a board a long time ago that suddenly went to requiring sign-ins and a "kept" name associated with the email as they'd had some problems. Anon and various versions of that were going fast, AnonDad, Anon1, and such. Since I liked to keep my gender out of the discussion, I chose a persona that was anonamous... Anonapersona.

The discus are 3" to 5", and yes this is a barbottome tank, but with a large chunk of driftwood with plants tied on. The mosses and anubias will be rooted to the wood in a few months.

The shrimp were sort of young, apparently tender, and possibly stunned by the CO2 in the planted tank. I seem to have 5 left.

Meanwhile, I've decided to feed the fish more, maybe they need more beefheart to keep them away from the shrimp. I really need the shrimp to clean the plants, but they won't go to the lower part of the tank, they stay in the top 3" where the discus have a hard time chasing them.

Yeah. Discus get conditioned to think that anything being added to the tank is chow.

Your best bet to add more shrimp would be to add them at night, In the dark. Then the discus will notice them in the AM and hopefully not think they are food. Hopefully...

Or maybe get some growth on them first...

On that note, my daughter just dropped by today and surprise!! She brought me 12 red cherry shrimp, about 1/2 inch. I put them in a planted 10 gal. to grow some, maybe I can turn some into the discus tank after they have grown more? I have that hair-like green algae in the planted discus tank.

My personal experience on discus-shrimp relationships: My 5" discus have never touched my yamato (Amano) shrimps and cherry shrimps, big or small. Perhaps it's cos of the thick lush plants for hidding, but then again, shrimps are seen swimming about on mid/top levels and even right infront of discus' eyes! I would suggest introducing bigger sized Yamato shrimps (at least 3cm long) and introducing them in the dark. For hair algae, I would also think Yamatos are more effective than cherries. Both types are, however, good at picking up uneaten food.
Pic attached gives an idea of my planted tank. I've about 40 Yamatos and possibly 100 cherries in it. The shrimps are booming and i'm now thinking of selling them to my lfs!
Cheers, Rob

Boy, you sure realize that you can tank breed these fish but when you drop a shrimp in, look out! I've got a few guppies in my tank. I noticed the discus were really looking different. All fins erect, their eyes are sharp looking, couldn't figure out what was going on so I sat and watched. There were some newborn guppy babies swimming around that were just born. Bang, and then they were gone! Kind of like the old days with saltwater tanks. 20 years ago, everyone was feeding their lionfish feeder goldfish or guppies. Same sort of hunting instinct kicks in!

I've got shrimp in another tank with tons of hiding places but just guppies and platies in that tank so no predation going on. If you have a lot of hiding places for the shrimp, some will survive the discus but boy, they will sure have to be sharp on their little feet!

I read somewhere that Amano shrimp like much cooler water than
the 84F in my Discus tank?

Well, guess i can be added to the list of people whose shrimp have become sushi..Bought 5 yamatos the other time from an LFS as i wanted to see if they could avoid being eaten by my angel fish but well, looks like that was impossible as i can't find those poor 5 little shrimps anywhere in my tank anymore. Sobz..
