Hey Guys~

I want to add something directly under my 55gal in my office to make it higher~When I stand up to it , it goes right to my chest...

My new 55gal in our living room is much higher and goes a lot past my chest...

They have different stands...Ya think? lol...both are Wrought Iron... 9sp) I think this is why the fish in my office spaz out at times cuz they are below me....

So.... Calling All Experts....How dumb would it be to drain this perfectly clear tank and add something for height? Something easy and cheap~http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/3/3_11_4.gif

Do people do that?? Well I am....lol ...so help??

Cinder blocks under the legs? Don't know how well that would look though or how stable.

LMBO!!!!

Hey Marie,
My tank sits on a piece of plywood that is 1" thick. I don't know how much higher you want it, but maybe you could do something like that? I think your tank is high enough that your fish should be fine. Mine do that sometimes to, but I think the little ones scare a little more easily.

On your knees?? GUYS!!!http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/10/10_5_136.gif

The little guys just get spooked easier. I have 4 at about 4inch and they only get spooked if you move fast and they arent ready for it, the adults dont get spooked much (I think they dont care), the 4 little guys I have get spooked at the slightest of movements but as soon as they see its ok, here they come ready to eat.

Hey marie,,,I hear you are trying the handfeeding huh? Pretty cool! I had my 6 year old daughter standing on a chair and holding a block of blood worms and here they all came eating right out of her hand (yeah, shes brave sticking her hand in there with those pirrahnas)(she thought it was really cool when she got to pet one). These are the ones I got from Kenny.
I have all of them eating from my hand except the adult pair. They look at me like,,(drop the damn food already!)

My 65s in my fishroom are around chest height as well. I wouldnt worry about it much unless its a height change for you rather than the discus.

Well Hello, Boys~

Real funny~ punks! lol....

Anyways, I just made this real yummy salad...and I dropped a worm in it!! Never eat while you feed the fishies....ya think?

OKay... the tank that is too low has my discus that are 8 months old, guys....and the two PBX...from AB...but they are not scared of anything!! Mike go look for a post from Kenny re cages shadow thingy....i think itz Cage's....it makes perfect sense, babe....cuz the other 55gal with my new ones...they are soooooooooo friendly! omg... they eat every meal out of my hands, Mike! Yes... a block of worms!! Very cool, yes?? And last night they let me pet them!! I pet them... (That tank is much higher~ ) Yoooooooooo, Ryan?? Did ya hear??

And you guys were no help whatsoeverbutiamnotsurprised!!http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/36/36_2_20.gif lol!

Kenny said he would pop on up to Sac and help me!

Tina Tina Tina... this is all your fault, woman! Cuz your stand is much taller than my orig one on the other 55...

Lets hope, children, that we get more productive ideas shall we?

It may not be a height issue, sometimes tanks that are low down have wierd shadows from the surrounding furniture and when u walk in more shadows and vibrations to get them freaked.....Is the tank painted on 4 sides?

White Worm
01-11-2006, 04:12 PM
Kenny does prefer to have them higher but he is mainly concerned with his adult breeders being higher up. Kenny is about 6'2", 6'3" and he uses a step ladder to reach the tops of his tanks with the pairs in them. All his others are about chest height or lower and they are not shy one bit. There are not many corner huggers or shy fish in kennys magic garage. If you have windows or lighting behind you it will cast shadows and spook the fish sometimes. He keeps the lights off in his garage and has the tank lights on so there wouldnt be any shadows to spook his fish much. He usually has the garage door cracked just about 3-4 ft to allow light in but not too much.

Marie, try keeping the room darker than the tank and see if anything changes. Hows that for productive?? LOL

Hey Ronrca,,, being a male is instinct,,,I dont think it matters if you are human or fish. I'm sure the male fish prefer nice fins and a good slime coat in place of nice breasts and a bronze tan though, lol.

ROTFLMAO! That's funny! When 2 fish that are interested in each other pass each other in my tank, they make sure that their fins are really erect and that they are their full height when they pass each other (kinda like a guy sucking in his gut when passing a girl?) Afterwards it is swim as usual, (take a deep breath and let it all hang out) LOL!

Okay, back on topic...

Marie, I don't think the height is your problem in that tank. As long as the fish are on a standard sized stand they should be high enough. The idea is not to have a tank down at floor level. Cage's tank was much lower than yours.

The fish may still be seeing shadows in your tank. Is the paper background on your tank laminated in plastic? If so, maybe they are seeing reflections or shadows off of it. Painting the bottom of the tank and putting something non-reflective on the back and/or sides will help to calm them down and keep them from freaking out.

Ryan

Hey Ryan~

I am actually taking care of that today, hopefully. If I feel better~
I know that Cage's tank was on the floor, you are right, and perhaps I was trippin....this tank here, Ryan, in my office, the established 55gal, is just lower than the new one in our family room....so every time I get up from my desk, here, if not slowly, they freak sometimes. And I was thinking that is why they did not come to the top of the tank when I am standing up, opening it...cuz it is lower...but my theory is outta whack, huh? I am comparing tanks, when i think my new ones are just so much more friendly~

I just wanted this tank high like the new one... I am always wanting something!! lol!

Hey Ryan, here's one for you....on the bottom of the tanks, it is mirrored, right? So the discus see themselves....I put my hand under the that bottom and I could not see it thru the inside...and nor did the fish...sooooooo........our Huskey, yesterday, cuz the new tank is much taller, and he can actually walk under it, so he did...and the discus darted!

But they didnt see him under there....and Raja's reflection wasnt there either....they must have seem him at an angle or something! I am always trying to figure out what they see and how...lol!

Thanks Ryan~

why you cant see what the fish see Marie, its called refraction of light - grade 8 science. i tried to sleep thru most of junior high, guess i wasnt alone ;)

and no, the bottoms of tanks are not mirrored..it may appear to you to be, but read teh article if you want to know why it looks like that to you

Kindredspirit

Tim~

They are not mirrored? http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/4/4_13_8.gif They only appear that way? Wow...go figure...I did read that article...and I thank you for that~

So.......it looks mirrored because the light bends when going through a transparent item other than it was originally passing thru and met with another media....to create my illusion? I do not understand~

Tell me that made sense?? lol!

Having said that, could you in Blonde Terms, tell me why I see Mirrors on the side and bottom? Please? lol!!

oh, and yeah...I do remember Fraction Of Light in 8th grade!! Of course! NOT! lol!!

I assumed the mirror effect wee se is because we are looking thru and additional piece of glass when looking from the front to the bottom .... and sides.

But if you look straight down thru the top the bottom isnt mirrored ........... isnt that what the fish see??

Guess i better take a look at that link on 8th grade science .......... been a long time .....lol.

edt: OK that didnt help ...... lol.

Your right Cage! If you look straight down from the top, there is no reflection. Regarding with the discus see, I dont know. What do discus see btw? Ive heard of dogs/cows and how they 'see' but discus Im not sure. Very interesting. I dont think that problem is the reflection.

Are the 3 others sides also covered?

I have foam insulation on the back and sides but not tight on the sides at all ..... just sitting there. I also have foam under the tank as well.

I would like to make it clear that my tank is NOT sitting on the ground .... lol. Its 12 inches off the ground ! :D

Just right so i dont need a ladder for the tank above it which will be a breeder tank and they are more importanat to have at eye level ......... so ive heard.

Cage - I would have to disagree with you on that. I believe the bottom of the breeder tank should be placed at least at eye level, or better yet top of your head to minimize movement/interference for the pair.

I know it's not necessary/practical to place tanks up that high but given a choice I think it works best for the pair.

Hi Marie,,,, Hi Candy,,,, I have one more experiment we should try on this whole reflection idea, K? The only way we could know for sure what the discus actually sees is to put your head in the tank, open your eyes and look through the bottom,,,,thats the only way to really know,,,come on marie,,,be a sport and give it the old college try, lol.

That was actually my original plan ............ to go 3 high with 2 grow outs (shelf 1&2) and 2 breeders on the top shelf.

But since i started with a 55 & 29 that wasnt possible due to hieght restrictions. The 55 is killing me height wise.

Thats why i picked up the two 40 breeders. I can do a 3 up rack with those.

The 40 breeders are36 long 18 wide and 16.75 high instead of the 12 wide 55 & 29. The 55 is also 21 high and 29 is 18 high.

Ultimately ............. for the 48 x18 rack .......... i would love to have some tanks 48 long, 18 wide and 16.75 high for 2 grow outs and two 24 x 18 x 16.75 tanks on top for breeders.. That way im taking full advantage of my rack space. Unfortunately that size tank doesnt seem to exist.

My next rack to go beside the 48 x 18 will probably be a 36 wide to do 3 up of the 40's.

Or just start building my own to fit the tanks i have .... lol

Whats wrong with sticking your head underwater? I do it at every wc cause some discus dont like to cuddle so I have to kiss them underwater instead (my attempt at bad humor)! Hence my avatar! You really think that photo editing? :D

Anyways, if you really want to 'see' underwater, here's a trick that is also used for photography underwater (the girls need to help me out with this though). Using a clear bowl whatever they may be called (corning wear, salad bowls, etc), place it in tank place and *poof* you can see underwater. Now you can also add a camera as well.

Just a thought! ;)
