Well I've kicked my wife and I out of the garage and taking over half of it for a fishroom. She doesn't mind too much because she will have her guest bedroom back now, which is good since our first baby is on the way. I'll take step by step photos through the project, which I plan to have completed in a couple weeks. Step one clean garage floor and paint it battleship gray for a nice clean look(that'll make em spawn!)

Make sure you use one of the Floor epoxys with traction stuff (Sand). regular paint on a concrete floor becomes an ice skating rink when wet!

would epoxy paint, or the gray paint, affect the ability of the concrete to let water pass through?

1977
03-11-2006, 02:45 AM
Not sure if I understand your question but the stuff I used should seal the concrete and keep water from doing any damage, Not that I ever spill any!Yea Right!

I realy do not see a need to put anything down to protect your floor. You can if you want to. A little water is not going to hurt it at all. Concrete is constantly curing and water if any will help even when it has set up. Concrete is pretty tough except when it is exposed to fire. The epoxy paint is really for visual effects in my opinion.

careful what you wish for as to a 'sealed' floor. that water has to go somewhere. when i spill on my basement floor i turn the lights off and go watch tv for awhile. come back and its gone. in a garage i suppose you can squeegee it out the door or whatever. the painted floor does look great.

Total square footage around 230 feet. Allows me space for 3 of the industrial racks that I use to hold tanks. I currently only have 10 tanks(5 breeders and 5 growouts) but by the end of the year that will probably grow.

I think she will just be glad to have my stuff out of the house. Even I'm sick of hoses running down the hall and into the bathtub. And I seem to have a serious flood about once a month and have completely ruined the carpet in 2 bedrooms and the hallway, and the bathroom which I finally tiled. If I had just built the fishroom when I first moved in I could have saved money! Oh Well!

YA know? ITs talk like that which keeps my husband from letting me get more than one tank. :> We have a newly built home and he is paranoid about water spillage and mold and all.

I guess he "does" have reason to be. In our older home (950 sq ft) I had 9 tanks going for mated pairs and grow outs. My python reached throughout the house, but that doesnt mean a thing since I often forgot to switch the water and sprayed all over instead of sucking it up. :p :p

ALso, my youngest son was into turtles of all types, he had 3 tanks, and another 4 for his lizards. And my oldest had 2 tanks for his tarantulas.

Now, my husbands 2 dogs and my 2 cats, they didnt need tanks.

Can we say obessive and compulsive? :D :D

I am still work ning on getting my 90 gallon tho. I will start a good thread when I get it all worked out in my mind.

Good Luck!!! And more pics!!

Hey Britt very interesting?....I have a similar project under construction in my garage. I plan to have 10 55gallon tanks. Where did you get your verticle storage tank? Was it expensive? B/c I was looking at one from Jehmco and it was 259 for the 250 gallons with additional 200 for shipping...so around 460 total for a 250 gallon storage. Is that a reasonable price? thanks

henry

1977
03-14-2006, 12:39 AM
No, I buy all my supplies from Jehmco but the shipping will kill you, so I buy water storage tanks from a local place. The brand of tank you want is Norwesco, go to their website and find a dealer near you and go pick it up. I paid $306 for my 300 gallon and that even included delivery of about 20 miles away! You might have to rent a truck to go get yours but still probably cheaper.

White Worm
03-14-2006, 03:41 PM
I was just wondering if you installed a door in the new wall so you still have access into the house from the garage door opening or is it a solid new wall that splits the garage?

1977
03-14-2006, 05:41 PM
Yes I did install a 36 inch door for getting things in there, plus fire safety. I put the door in last night and didn't realize what a pain that is.

1977
03-24-2006, 10:22 AM
Yes, for the time being I will continue to syphon by hand with an 1800gph pump on the other end, so trust me it's not slow!I just don't want to drill glass at this time. I have 2 racks out there now and plumbed but what has taken up all my time the last 2 days is the overflows on the storage tanks and the plumbing of the manifold around the pump. This plumbing process is more challenging than I expected! More measuring, cutting, priming and gluing than you can imagine! I'm having a blast!I'll have some good pics tonight because I didn't take any yesterday so keep your on here tonight!

the pump is in the lower left of pic, the in line comes in from right side and the out of the top. The in line comes from all 3 storage tanks and my line for syphoning the tanks. The out goes to the drain and to the tanks for filling. This takes some serious head scratching to make it come together just right(at least for me)but it seems to be working great so far.

Do you have the tank drains in? Couldnt tell from the pics.

Just curious how you setup the draining.

Tanks drilled or did you rig up something over the edge of the tanks?

The draining is the one thing im trying to figure how to do right now. Obviously the fill lines are pretty easy to do.

Would love to see some more detailed pics.......... after you take a break .............. Ok thats enough of a break :D

Just went back and saw you said you werent doing tank drains cause you dont want to drill them.

Theres plenty that have drains that arent drilled.

Thats actually what i plan to do.

Keeping an over the edge drain line primed is the biggest thing or figuring out how to prime them easy.

I was looking around at some pumps last night and i believe there is some that can be run dry or self priming pumps that would work so you dont have to worry about the syphon. When you turn it on it will just start sucking the water up.

Anyone know more about those??

1977
03-25-2006, 01:30 AM
Yes, doing pvc over the edge of tank would be a nice touch but you still need to clean the crap off the bottom with a hand held hose. With a big pump like mine, I might as well just syphon out that way. Plus if I see another piece of pvc anytime soon I will drown myself in the 125!

Instead of an overflow in your storage tank, just add a float valve.

1977
03-29-2006, 12:18 PM
Much of the time I just fill the storage tanks with a hose or the waste water from the ro unit so I don't know how to make a float valve work for that. Plus I don't fully trust float valves, especially if I were gone for a couple days. Anyway it's too late because I've already plumbed the overflows.

1977
03-29-2006, 12:21 PM
Well I'm still tweeking this project. I found that my pump wasn't strong enough to lift water up my 1" pvc from inside my storage tanks. I had the pipe coming out of the top and over to the pump. I switched it around and am now running the water out the bottom of the tanks and it works like a charm, should have done it that way in the first place.

You can get a float valve from Ace Hardware. They have the ones use for farms. It's use to fill the cattle's water troughs. It's made for a 3/4" pipping. Homedepot has a brass reducer from a 1/4" to 1/4" line. I use to do the same with my RO waste water.

I have never had one fail on me. YET:o It easily install.

You mean 3/4" to 1/4" reducer, right? I will check out Ace Hardware. I like the idea of float valves, but I had electronic float valves fail on me before. Is this mechanical? I was thinking for my storage, use a timer plus an overflow. Now I'm thinking...timer, float valve & overflow...just in case. I'm thinking of building a completely automated water changer (3X/week)... Dan

Hey Dan, I went to Ace Hardware & they only had electric float switches & didn't know what I was talking about. I checked acehardware.com & it only listed 2 electric float switches. I could really use one that would work out of a garden hose. Do you have a link or more info where I could get one? Do you sell them? Many thanks. the other Dan

On the Pic of your water command center, you have a black handled ball valve on what appears to be a straight peice going to your sewer line AND a U-shaped trap underneath that. Am I viewing it wrong? If not, what is that all about?

I have a line going in the pump and one going out. On the in line I have it branched into 3 lines, each coming from a seperate storage tank and each with a ball valve. On the out line I have 2 branches, one going back to my tanks with a ball valve at each tank and one going to the main drain line with a ball valve. That pic is deceiving, do make sure you have pee traps in good spots also.
