how do you feed? do you just drop a few cubes of ie, brine shrimp in
and let them go at it? In a bb you can tell what's eaten and what's not -
with my planted I can't tell how much the discus are getting and how much
hits the bottom for the plecos? How much do you feed, and how often?

Suzanne,

Basically I always defrost my frozen ffod before feeding it in any tank, but particularly in my planted tanks. I put small amounts in and can take ten minutes feeding each tank (planted ones),. Basically I put a bit and and watch tehm eat, when there is none left I put more in, only small amounts each time. I measure out the portions before hand on a plate. its actually one of the more enjoyable chores I do - well not really a chore at all, also it gives me areal good chance to look them over.

Hi Suzanne,

With 6 discus and 2 cories in a 60 gallon, I feed them a cube of hikari FBW 4 times per day. The fish can usually finish the cube within a minute, after which I will either wait a while or immediately drop another one in.

These are adult discus, however. For Juvies I would probably recommend BB setup until they get past the rapid growth stage.

Good luck!

Dennis

Just hold a hunk of bloodworms in the tank like in this video:

If you feed worms (either frozen or live) get a worm cone feeder. You can maybe find them locally, or you can order them from several online dealers. Try to get the large one.

I feed my discus Hikari FBW, and I just drop a cube or two in the cone. I have multiple cones, and the discus learned to go to the cones to get their food. The worm cone feeder works with pellets too, like tetra color bits. I like the cones because it prevents the foods from messing up the bottom of my tank. Since my tank is fully planted, I never siphon the gravel, so the less gunk that gets to the bottom, the better.

I hold the frozen food in the tank and let the fish eat. Every so often I bat away the cloud of clown loaches with my finger so the Discus will feed. There's never a worry about food dirtying the tank as the clowns don't allow it to get far. I'm sure the Discus eat enough in their twice daily feedings as they are active, healthy & growing.

Dave,
That is really cool, even the clowns are not afraid of you :)
Nice pictures too!

I take a cup and fill it with warm water. Mix a few cubes for frozen or choped uo frozen beefheart let it thaw stir it up drin the nasty water from the cup (through a screen) refill with warm clean water and dup little in at a time. Once it is gone give them a little more.
