After years of waiting i finally took the plunge .Bought a pair of snakeskins and leopard skins last January from a local petshop even before buying my tank, but did not get them since my tank set up was just a little over two months now. Since then I acquired two more golden ones and another pair of snowflakes. Thanks to all the threads in this forum/site I learned a lot about the benefits of water changing and the different kinds of food to feed them to figuring out their sexes. It has been a very
relaxing ,rewarding, worrying, experience.I feel like a dad always checking up on his kids every time I come home.Thought Id drop a note today to thank everyone in this forum for sharing their experties and difficulties in this new found obsession.Because it is.My Kids are growing pretty fast.I will try to post some pics soon. Also wondering where can I visit some breeders or maybe some fellow enthusiasts in the Toronto area. AgainThanks!

Thanks!
Got them in a local shop steeles/midland area.He carries quite a bit of variety.
Another petshop just opened close to a plaza near my place and claims to have the best breeds of discus in his home.Have not seen them yet but will soon visit his basement by his place.I saw four huge ones in his shop which stirred up the conversation about discus.

Best to buy discus directly from the breeders. You are assured of good quality and healthy discus. There are a couple that I know of and recommend. They are Barb Newell of Canada Discus and Bob Garside of Upper Canada Discus. I have delt with both of them and found them to be dedicated hobbiests and care about their fish. Barb just went through major surgery and not sure if she is upto having visitors. You might try contacting them through this site.
Good luck with your new discus. If you need further info PM me.

Welcome to Sd ~ you seem excited! Pl do post pics soon as we love them here!

Since you did say you read a lot here ~ you are aware of qt procedures I'm guessing ~ esp since you frequent lfs ~ It is like a box of choc ya just never know what you are going to get!! Good fish can be found tho ~ I have one!

Joe is correct ~ it is best to buy from reliable source but not all can do that ~ shipping can be a killer ~qt and apply a good eye ~ mix some common sense and you shld prevail!

toronto discus fans have it made (from my isolated perspective anyway:))

you have Barb who is a very knowledgable home breeder (and a wonderful person to boot...not that i condone booting wonderful ppl); you have Kumar who is a major importer with over 2000 discus in his basement (and the owner of the new lfs you are referring to i believe) and you also have Bob Garside of Upper Canada Discus with some of the nicest disus in the world.

us ole maritimers, all we get is rain drizzle and fog (and the occasional gov't handout to keep us from threatening independance...Viva La Maritimes Libre!!)

QT is a good reason for a new tank.
Bigger is always better for growing them kids.
Each one has its own unique look.
Group of 8 ,planted,BB,or non BB,planted or non.
Variety is always the best diet.
Water changes waterchanges and water changes.
i wont try to be a chemist or engineer but just try to observe
how they react to your daily TLC.
"Stiiiiil going!" ......boom..boom...boom..boom.(in the tune of the energizer rabbit)
