My Rams!

Hey Guys ~

I added five of my rams over to the 55gal in my office ~ and there are five left in the 35gal ~ When I put the five in the 55gal they all changed colors!! Why did they do that??

So.......can you tell which are in which tank? I am going to put them all in the 55gal I think~

These pics do not do these fish justice as they are fast lil suckers and I have been snapping for days! You don't even wanna know how many I have gone thru ( Barb & Amber quiet! lol) I was obsessed with getting that vibrant blue you see ~ I so love it~

Yes they all have that gold color around the head, bolivian rams have a completely different coloration, german blues have other colors along with that gold and gold rams are just like blues, except they do not have all the other colors, only the gold.

They look great Marie!! They probably colored up so much because they are happier in the 55. Also.. rams show their BEST colors when they are going to spawn. ;)

It's relatively easy to tell their sexes. Most german blues have a very distinct "black" spot on the side of their bodies...if you see quite a few of some silver/purple specklings on top of that "black" spot they'll be females. Males don't have many speckling at that area and the black spot will remain mostly black.

Also when the females are ready to lay their bellies will turn like pink and a little "bloated"...it's very obvious. Males will tend to grow faster, bigger and more colorful within the same batch.

In fact all of the rams in Marie's pics should be males. Are they the more colorful and bigger ones among yours Marie?

Here's an older pic I have of some of my rams breeders. Not very clear but I think at least you can see the difference/specklings around that "black spot" area.

Those are some very beautiful fish you are raising. I just took 4 females and a male out of QT today and added them to my 125 along with the two adult males already in that tank. Rams are one of my favorites too.

Hey Sindu! How are you?? Those Rams are in my 55gal with 6 discus ~ I got them from Kenny in the City ~ San Francisco ~ lol!

They are very entertaining! People think they are sensitive but I think they are pretty tough! I will always have Rams now ~ I have fallen in love with them~I dont do anything special really to clean ~ just reg housekeeping and wc~

Hi Marie - if my eyes did not deceive me I believe the one on the left is a male, while the one on the right is a female. If you look closely the possible male on the left has more yellow coloring, and it lacks the speckling(I mean right on top of the middle black spot, not around) mentioned. Also the possible female looks like her belly is a little pinkish to me as well. Just my best guess by looking at the pics...definitely could be wrong lol.

I have bred rams and its not too difficult to tell when the pic is good which is which and I am 100% certain that the left is a male and the right is a female :)

They are finally building a tunnel through the mountain, it's due to open in 2010. I understand that after all the rains this year, Devil's Slide is now pernanently closed, too much of it slid into the ocean. (I still have family and friends there and so get some news)

No we lived across Skyline Blvd....near hell I so forgot....but our house actually fell into the ocean !! I swear! My folks sued and we won ~

Then in high school we lived right down the summit from the school I forget that street ~ I am old now ~ lol! But we hung out in Westlake a lot!

That would still be Westlake, unless you lived a little further south, which would be Fairmont, but that is technically in Pacifica. As to the houses falling into the ocean, I still remember that well.
Rams are "harem breeders" and a single male will have 2 or 3 consorts. They are each defending their territories, when you see them meet in the middle. In your 55 I wouldn't add any more males. But saying that, I have 2 males, full grown, who "hang out" together... so you never know.

Hi Larry - if you decide to come be sure to ring my bell! My house is relatively easy to find because it has a sign on the door that says "Come get my rams, they are free to my friends." And I'm not kidding Larry. I do know the ppl at Aquatraders quite well and I got all my tanks there and ppl there are all nice folks. Be sure to ask for Gary and he'll treat you right. Again if you're coming in Nov I can go with you to get any tanks/accessories that you might be looking for.

I think I should check out sfbaaps because a friend of mine(Raymond) told me it is a great site, especially for info regarding planted tanks.

The stables were still there the last time I went by, but was... 10 years ago. Kenny is still close so maybe he could look, Kenny? Not sure what you mean by "Ya know the one? Where they built that ugly a$$ Cliff House and totally swept away whatever iota of San Francisco history was left" do you mean when they remodeled what was left of the Sutro Baths after the fire? Geeese! Alll this talk about home is starting to make me "home sick " LoL

They closed the Cliff House for almost two years I think ~ it was brutal to go there and not go in! But we were excited ~ not anymore ~ It is so ugly Larry and I have so many friends that live in the City and feel the same ~ Candy has been there with me ~ Inside is okay and you can still view the ocean and Seal Rock and all that but....

OK all of you ram experts, I need a little breeding information and help.

I have moved several of my rams around and the male that you saw in the picture has 3 females with him that all look pretty "ripe".

Should I move them in to a tank of their own?

Is 1 male to 3 females a good ratio?

Do they require any special conditions (parameters, substrates, etc)?

They are in some of my discus tanks right now.

"Do they require any special conditions (parameters, substrates, etc)?" Like wild discus---- soft, acid water, a flat rock (or something similar) to lay eggs on. I use a fine substrate, but I know many who go bb.

A 10 gallon is a large enough tank, but in that case I would only put 1 gravid female to 1 male. I prefer a 20 gallon and to have 3 females, with lots of territorial markers.
