Marie, looking good. I have always been a goby fan. I haven't had any for years though. The BB gobys are a bit hard to feed. They typically will only take live food. Keep an eye on them and make sure they are getting their feed. I have never tried the Night Gobys. They sure are cute.

The tank looks good. The Gobies l00k awesome. I've had BB gobies before, I think I'm going to get somemore after look at your tank with yours. I wonder if they would eat bloodworms?! I've never had an experience with knight gobies and they are way cute.

And I feed them everything ~ they are right here in my face So I am watching constantly.... The Knights have the biggest mouth! I love this tank ~ a lot ~

Marie,

I like the fish...I've never kept gobies but they do look interesting. But is that a brackish tank? According to my books, the bumblebees and the knight gobies need some salt in their water (which the tetras probably wouldn't approve of). Sorry if I just complicated your life, but it might be something to get more info on, if it's news to you.

I stole this from a web site

The knight goby is a native of the brackish waters of Southeast Asia. Like some other gobies, the knight goby can gradually adapt to living in either freshwater or saltwater. However, the knight goby tends to do best in freshwater with a tablespoon of salt added for every five gallons of water.

It doesn't seem to need an awfully high amount of salt

Marie,

I love this tank, too. I have been leary of the BB gobies... seem to not do well in the LFS tanks and I know nothing about them. Keep us informed.
THe knight gobies I LOVE but again, didnt try them since I had also heard they need salt. And this was when I was under the impresion needing salt meant marine tgank. (how far I've come!)

Glad you are enjoying this tank so much. ITs good to have more than the discus, it adds some variety to your caring for them. ;)

WIsh Hubby would let me have more than one tank. (this is how it all started last time!) LOL :argue:

Marilyn,
Aint it the truth? My wife made me promise to stop after 2. If you don't count the 10's we now have 5. (and no, we do not count the 10's) <grin>

One of my books says knights "will be healthier if 1-2 tablespoons of salt is added per 2.5 gallons of water." Another specifies 1 tablespoon per ten liters for knights and bumbles. A third book (Encyclopedia of Freshwater Tropical Fishes by the notorious Dr. Herbert Axelrod et al.) says at least one tablespoon per 8 liters. The text that follows strikes me as amusing for some reason: "Knight Gobies are hard to keep in good health without proper feedings of worms, and they require at least 10% of their water to be sea water or a fair substitute thereof. When all is said and done they will probably jump out of the tank and dry out on your living room rug, but people still buy them. Perhaps you can find a reason for this fish being a member of your community tank, where, if you don't feed him, he'll start chewing on fishes about half his own size." Apparently Dr. A. wasn't too fond of knight gobies, but I agree that they're cute!

Hey Guys!

He IS cute! All of them are ~ As far as the salt controversy goes ~ the lfs did tell me that they are 'somewhat brackish' which doesn't really mean anything ~ I thought okay fool just bag em and I will do my own research ~

o.k.a.y. idiotOsos! Sorry....not to happy w/ our lovely lfs as of late ~ once the qt is over with the Rummy Nose I will add them somewhere! I did treat ALL of them for the HEEBIE JEEBIES that invaded my home ~

I have done quite a bit of reading on these lil creatures and Jerry is pretty much right ~ But it isnt marine salt but the salt we use in our tanks anyways ~ it is a small ten gal ~ it seemed to me that everything I have read and researched was never in agreement! Very inconsistent and confusing to say the least! So I grabbed this and snatched that and .....

So....... I what I do is add one tablespoon of salt at every wc and all seems to be doing okay cross my toes! I also joined a Goby site ~

They are pigs too! Such huge mouths and they love fbw! My little Buzz is priceless! I wuv him! They only had one ~ or I wld have gotten a whole pack...herd...group..... school? lol!

Thanks everyone ~

My lfs is worse than yours...I went this morning and there was a sign on the knight goby tank: "Brackish tank: one cup salt per five gallons." That's not brackish water, that's damp salt!

Thats about right for a full marine setup. You use a lot of salt!! Damned expensive water changes too!

Very nice tank Marie, its nice to have something a bit different.

I should have asked the pet shop if they actually keep gobies in such a strong saline environment (I doubt it). In actuality, adding a tablespoon of salt with every wc sounds like it'll suit the gobies just fine. They might even get by with less, and if you kept the tetras in there long-term, you might want to see if the gobies will compromise on their salt requirements. What I don't know is whether long-term exposure to salt would actually hurt the tetras (it's certainly not a natural environment for them), and if so, exactly what would happen (kidney damage)? Also, none of the references I have tells exactly what happens to brackish fish if they're kept in fresh water long-term (increased susceptibility to parasites or what). I'd like to know more about those points.

In my experience with tetras (most types) they do not tolerate hard alkaline water very well. In most cases their life ecxpectancy is much reduced.

I do not know if goby's will compromise on their water requirements, they are not a fish I have much experience of.

I've heard rummy nose tetras lose their coloring if they're stressed. Especially in the first photo, yours seem to have nice red nosies, so I guess they're happy, salt or no salt...

Rummynose tetras will dull their coloration during water changes and at night time. At least that is when I have seen mine loose their red.

Very cute Marie!

You've done a nice job of the goby tank, Marie. Did you add any salt to the tank yet? It will help them especially as they grow. I was looking into a figure 8 puffer but same thing, they need salt whereas the fish I wanted to put him with don't. So no puffer for me.

Plastic plants so they won't wilt with a salt addition!:)

Kindredspirit
06-08-2006, 09:23 PM
yeah yeah yeah .....i added salt ~ good Lawd ~ LOL!

I was trippin on it tho so I took out the Rummy Nose and put them in the 35 gal that I will never have any money ever again in my life ....that I am saving for my African Cichild tank:(

They do seem much more active ~ but I can not find for the life of me how much salt to add for a ten gal!! Itz so F* annoying Barb! I called like four lfs : Looked on line too ~

" 5tbls * 5tsp * 1cup * 1/4 cup* omg!

I added two tablespoons ~ lets hope all is okay!

Some is better and better also to add less like you have. At least some in there is of benefit to them. What do your goby forums say to add?

Remember I could not find anything on it? Getting Old Barb? It was nice talking to you as long and as much as we did last night~

It was good for us yes? I just turned the light on the Goby tank and it is sooooooooo clean and crystal! I love this tank!
