Marie,

I've absolutely no idea ~ I've got to be the worlds worst at guessing the sex of fish :(

But they are really, really good looking rams. Can I have them???

Marie - you're doing such a great job raising those rams...all I can say is WOW. Just look at pic #5 and it speaks a thousand words. They weren't even close to their current form when you got them initially. I'm ABSOLUTELY proud of you Marie!

Now is it just me or what they all look like males to me lol...

You guys are so funny!! I have bigger ones ~ I so wanna know cuz they are all in their own little groups and have like two or three that they hang out with and they then meet another group and fight!

The one that you like Kenny is HUGE! I have three that are so big ~ At one point I thought they were all males too! but the two little ones ~

Of you three I thought sure I would get an answer man!! My Ram Experts!

I will be back~

Couldn't agree more.

4 & 5 look like females to me, 5 just is not gravid at the moment.

Wow, at first glance they all looked like males to me, too. They're all so big and plump. It's really hard to say. Usually the females will be more short while the males are longer, and the males usually have longer rays on the front of their dorsal fin. Females tend to have less exaggerated fins. I'm officially stumped though. lol.

Kenny,
btw I may be sending you a couple of male rams, lets just say they were apparently alone together too long and really belong closer to your "neck of the woods". Stupid gay rams...

Now I have more and BIGGER pics for you experts.....oh ******** I have to go and snatch them from photo bucket!!:) come back?

Ok Marie! MUCH better pics so flooding your tank was worth it! ;)

1 - difficult to tell, but I think its a male.. but the fish that is by the rock is most definitely female!

2 - not sure

3 - 100% MALE

4 - 100% FEMALE

5 - too difficult

6 - 100% MALE

7 - 100% MALE

8 - too difficult

9 - 100% MALE

10 - difficult... male?

11 - difficult... female?

There ya go :)

Whether they are male or female, I just want to say, they are well looked after Marie!! You sure don't see rams like yours at pet stores!

Okay, how do you remember who you have taken pics of? I sometimes get lost when I take pics of my two gold pigeons.:p

Hey Marie there all males exccept the first one you posted on the second set. The males have 2-3 black upper frount dorsal fine. the females are dull in coloration verses the males.

What else i was told is there tummys get red. But thats what i heard I may be wrong. I have the same problem as you. mine all look the same I I wont be able to tell you till I get a spawn. lol good luck and beautiful rams.

Female Ram

notice the difference in the belly color? The females have way more color in the abdomen than the males.

Big body shape difference too. Females are much more oval and compact, males are much more elongated and full body. (nice comparison, Vince+Carrie) The only obvious female that I saw in your pics Marie, was in the bottom of the first pic of the second set of pictures.

That's also my opinon too(no offense Amber, JMO lol). What Condor said was exactly what I was gonna reply until I read his.

I think you did take multiple pics of the same one(s) there Marie.

I take issue with using the 'gay' word ~ it could be offensive to some esp on a site as extensive as this

marie, why do you take issue with the word "gay"?

isnt that the actual word gay people/groups use to describe themselves? is "gay" politically incorrect in california now? what word is used now instead of gay?

Timbo
06-16-2006, 05:59 AM
the reason i ask is, in parliamentary law here in canada, along with the use of the term "same sex couple" (but that only describes a couple, it is not appropriate for a single person) gay is the word used.

Kindredspirit

I ask myself that 100x Tim ~ I guess what bugs me is that we don't sit around and say "oh thatz so heterosexual!". At least I have not heard it lately ~ I think the gay community is singled out and I take issue with that I do ~ itz not okay ~ IMO Tim ~ you will never convince me they chose such a difficult path in life ~ but everyone has the right to be happy ~ I have gay friends and I have seen the look on their faces with comments such as these and I will always be an advocate with this ~ I work with severely emotionally disturbed teens that have tried to end their lives Tim over this issue simply cuz they were not accepted ~ It is not okay ~

I try not to let it get me but it does ~ it is something that runs deeps in me ~

I hate fish stores and there half *** thoughts. The belly was the smartest thing they could of said. Wow every day i read forms makes me hate the LFS even more.

Hello Marie, a main difference between sexes in rams is their dorsal fin.

If they have an elongated and pointed dorsal fin, its a male.

If its round, than its a female. Also females have reddish bellies when compared to males.

It's easier to sex them when they are mature. The dorsal fin in the males becomes much longer and more prominent than in the females. In young rams though, they look very much the same, with the exception of the belly coloring.

And Marie, I think everybody is shy about guessing because it is hard to tell from pictures!

Nice rams (again)

lol! That's why we're not guessing ;)

We were terrible at it too. When we bought our first three rams, the lady at the store said she would give us one male and two females. So we're watching her net these fish carefully out of a tank with about 60 rams in it...completely mystified by how she could tell them apart

So we asked "how to you know which ones are which"...haha, and she says "I just ask them" and winks at us :p

So after having them at home for awhile, we finally clue in to the fact the the females did have slightly rosy tummies. This coloring became more apparent as they got older, and when they were breeding of course.

Now it's easy, because our males are noticably bigger than our females, and of course the males fins are so much longer.

Anyhoo, to make a short story long, I sympathize with trying to sex fish! :D

They look like all males to me...but it is really hard to tell LOL. Males usually have longer 2nd & 3rd dorsal fin rays...and the females have a noticeable pinkish tinge to the belly. I read also about the blue spots in or around that black blotch behind the head...forgot exactly the details but it seems that one sex either has them inside the blotch or doesnt.

When they start to pair up, there's no mistaking...they'll start "rushing" each other, maybe do a bit of lip-locking & tugging(the female will definitely have a pinkish belly at this point)...once they've paired up they will keep all others away from their area.

I agree with the others, they are gawwwww-jus! I want some!;)

the best pics to have in order to sex would be close up from the side. there are different ways to sex them. 1. obviously when they mate and start laying eggs. 2. the belly colour is hot pink to a red colour. my female has a hot pink belly. 3. the first three rays of the dorsal fin (the black ones) are noticably longer than the rest of the dorsal on males. the ones on my male are just about twice as long. 4. females sometimes have little flourecent blue dots surrounding the big black dot on their side as if they were tattooed on (not just randomly either, perfectly spaced)

as for colour, there is really no difference in dulling between the two of them. it seems that they can turn their colour on or off at will. seems to be a emotion thing. when they were spawning ( and really happy) i thought that they would almost glow in the dark, they were so bright.

1st pic of the second group... 100% male on top and female on bottom
3,6,7,9 pic of the second group... 100% male
5th pic in the first group (close up) 100% male

If they are not breeding.. the pink can fade away to just about nothing. The blue spots... not a good indication at all.
