Do they need em?

No they dont HAVE to have them but the purpose is to make the discus feel a little more comfortable. When the discus see all those little fish swimming around, they know there are no predators (at least this is what I read a long time ago) but there are plenty of people who keep just discus in the tank.

Myself... I keep them because I like to see good variety of fish in the tank. I want the eye drawn to the discus, but I want something else to look at too and it just seems more "natural" to me to see other fish swimming around with the discus :)

Cardinal Tetras, Rummynose Tetras, Rams are all good choices

Well... I dont have the discus anymore.. but the dithers I had were:

longfin serpae tetras
cardinal tetras
rummynose tetras
longfin danios
blue rams
and gold rams

yellow plecos
brisal nose
Cardinal tetra’s
siamese algae eaters

and thinking about fancy tail guppies.

I would stay away from the serapes, they are fin nippers.

it's only been a couple of weeks but i put a couple of killifish in my tanks and they seems to get along in there just fine. actually the discus and the rams seems to square off a lot more. the killi's seem to just ignore everyone else.
