Hey guys ~

For some reasons my Rams are attacking my Discus!! Brutally I might add! And the Discus do not attack back ~ Why all of a sudden? Why don't they fight back? I mean the Rams hit them HARD guys:( Sorry .... these pics are horrible as I do not have the time to take 300 pics ~ I am worried....but you get the jest ~ hopefully!

Do you think that there cld be some eggs somewhere? I mean some of the discus are really trippin and darting ~ someone is gonna get hurt ~ And Im thinking itz not the Rams ~ ( Sorry Kenny ~ love em but....Hell No) They have always lived in peace and totally indif to each other....I wanna know why....and I wanna know now! lol!

What shld I do? Nothing? Oh and sorry about all the algae I am doing major housecleaning on all tanks today ~ as I am going to the City this weekend ~

Thanks Guys!

Wow, Marie - the only times I've heard of Rams attacking is when they are defending eggs or fry or maybe a spawning site! They are usually peaceful little Cichlids. Are all of your Rams attacking? Or just certain ones? Do they seem to be attacking from a particular area, when the Discus enter that vicinity? Discus are easily bullied, too!

LOL Marie...either your rams have eggs somewhere in your tank or they are getting ready to lay theirs! Rams are very territorial during breeding times so let's look around the tank for eggs or take a close look at their breeding tubes/female's bellies(pink color) and give us an update...I'm pretty sure of it.

Those pics are hilarious! lol I'm telling you they're not afraid of nobody when they're in breeding mode!

Marie.. I agree.. either they have eggs or are going to spawn. Do not worry about the discus, they cannot hurt them. My rams kept all four of my discus (thats all I had when I had the ram pair before) holed up in the back corners for the entire spawn time! Stick your arm in there and see what happens! lol Its pretty cool.

Do not freak babe. They wont hurt your discus and its normal :)

Well...rams are cichlids and that means they are intelligent, individualistic, and somewhat territorial. I agree that spawning may be imminent, but I don't think it's guaranteed. I once had a ram that started a war with a much larger pearl gourami. It wasn't a matter of spawning since there was only the one ram. The ram didn't hurt the gourami, but definitely bullied him for a few months. Then one day the gourami figured out that he didn't have to take this, and the ram was in BIG trouble.

Even normally peaceful species like rams can decide they don't like someone, and turn nasty. Since your rams are good-sized, maybe they decided the discus are in the same category as themselves (i.e. fish), and territorial instincts took over.

But I hope it is spawning, since those rams are so nice, and it would be fun to get some fry. Anyway, this is an interesting development, and I'll be looking forward to hearing how it turns out. I have 3 rams in a 29 gallon tank with 2 discus, and I have this problem someday...

Hey Guys ~

Ms. Pringles has enough of these lil sh!ts! She and my Tang are like fighting back now! There is no love in this tank I'm afraid:( Ms. P is the king of this tang and she just lays flat like this every time a Ram comes by ~ why do they do that? Can they fight better when flat?

So tell me ~ what do eggs look like? Caviar? lol! Actually I meant what color?? lol! Next time you see pics my tank will be spotless I promise! I can not believe I posted such an awful looking tank!

What are you talking about!! lol. Your tank looks pretty clean to me :P

If you ram is pregnant, she will look really fat and you will see the white breeding tube coming out of her. At least, that's how ours look when they are about to lay eggs...the pic you posted doesn't look very preggo to me. But maybe they have laid eggs already. Usually they stick pretty close to the eggs, so see where the rams are hanging out, and check there for eggs.

Not that it helps this situation much, but I have a friend whose discus killed his rams. He said he could actually hear the popping from the discus' mouths one night and the next morning found the rams all beat up. Maybe your rams heard about it?

Marie, these look like a male and female ram to me. See the flat surface they are hovering over? It's probably going to be a future spawning site. Rams spawn on smooth, flat surfaces like rocks or even the glass on the tank bottom (if it were bare-bottom).

The male is the bigger of the two, and I'm sure he's the one doing most of the bullying. The female is the smaller fish on the right in this picture, and you can see that her stomach is very red/pink. Watch the rams... are they staying close to this area? Are they chasing other rams away from this spot?

Hi Marie,

My suggestion is move out the Ram pair to other small tank..may be 2 feet tank is ok. You can see them acting spawning. That's good for them and you loverly discus.

regards.

Hey Ryan! You are absolutely corrrect! The big one is the one that does all the bullying and they are protecting that corner 24/7~And yes they chase away everyone incl their own from this area ~ same with the area under the flat rock cave ~ I thought there was some eggs there as these Rams were so vicious to all the Flat Boys LOL!

Not bad Young One ~ not bad at all ~ very smart:D Thank you Ryan!!

Jerry ~ I think too ~ now the Discus have figured out that just are not gonna take it anymore! They are def fighting back and chasing them good!

Vince and Carrie ~ umm...yeah guys ~ my tanks looks like crap helloooooooooo? lol!! Dontcha see all the alage on the rocks? ugh!! I was so busy last night when I noticed this Ram issue ~ hell I was worried cuz it was like they had completely lost there F* mind on a dime!

Patrick ~ thank you so much for your suggestion! I totally appreciate it ~ however ~ it just is not practical for me to move anyone ~ if I was to move all the 'pairs' in this tank from Discus to Rams.....******** Pat I wld be seen quite a few ten gal tanks sitting around:)

I see what you mean Marie, there is a major war going on in my planted tank too since I have multiple pairs in there. They are taking turns harasing my 6" red line shark and I've seen them peck at my discus too. They look like the terrier dogs of the cichlid world, big cichlid in a little package, LOL.

That is a great picture! Yes, it was like that. I had 5 breeding pairs in my tank for a short while. If a Discus even got anywhere near their territory, they would attack them. I went down to two pairs and each owned half the tank. (110 gallon) Which made it almost impossible for the Discus to eat from the tank floor. They were relentless at pecking away at the Discus, and the Discus would have to retreat. But they didn't learn, they would keep going back for the food. So I removed them all to other tanks. Only 1 pair per tank here, but not in the Discus tank. The Blue Rams still rule their entire tank!! Little devils! LOL
