Why no carbon?

I've read in several places that you shouldn't use charcoal/carbon in discus tank filters. The only explanation I've seen is that it "leads to disease." Can someone explain this more fully?

I was told it takes out some cemicals, or protines that the discus need. I was also told That you us carbon only to take the medication out of the tank. I was told it a long time ago and I put more media in my pumps.
